Job Description Glendale Elementary School District Speech and Language Pathologist Purpose Statement The job of Speech and Language Pathologist is done for the purpose/s of identifying students with communication disabilities; planning and implementing appropriate treatment and communication skills to assist students with accessing academic content; and provide direction to Speech Language Pathology Assistant. Other Functions Assesses students' communication skills for identifying communication disorders, determining program eligibility, and developing recommendations for treatment, including assessment of augmentative communication tools. Collaborates with parents, teachers, physicians, administration, team members, and other professionals for communicating information and resolving issues in compliance with guidelines. Coordinates meetings and processes for eligible students (testing/screening, IEPs, parent conferences, pre‑referral staffing, etc.) to present evaluation results, develop treatment plans, and provide training to parents/students/staff. Develops treatment plans, interventions, and educational materials to improve communication skills and academic access, compliant with regulatory requirements. Evaluates and instructs students in the use of appropriate communication technologies and assistive devices. Instructs support staff and parents on communicative disorders, assistive devices, feeding techniques, and implementing prescribed treatment plans. Interprets medical reports within scope to provide information and ensure intervention plans are appropriate. Maintains records (progress reports, therapy logs, billing info, treatment plans, documentation, screening results) for compliance. Participates in meetings, workshops, seminars for conveying or gathering information. Performs other duties as assigned for efficient unit operation. Performs site visits, including home visits, to provide therapy and assistance. Prepares written materials (therapy logs, correspondence, memos, treatment plans, Medicaid billing, reports) to document activities and comply with federal/state mandates. Provides speech and language therapy and culturally competent assessment services to students, considering linguistic and socioeconomic factors. Researches resources and methods for evidence‑based approaches to student needs. Responds to inquiries from parents, teachers, staff, administrators for information or referral. Screens students to determine need for further individualized assessment. Transports assessment and treatment materials to various sites to ensure availability. Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Apply assessment instruments, operate specialized equipment used in treatment of communication disorders, use office equipment and software, prepare and maintain accurate records. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing mechanisms and disorders; principles and practices of speech and language therapy; relevant codes, policies, regulations, laws. Ability to schedule activities, gather, collate, classify data, and use job‑related equipment; work independently and with diverse groups; adapt to changing priorities; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines; work as part of a team; translate therapy data into meaningful educational activities. Responsibilities Work under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods. Lead, guide, and/or coordinate others. Operate within a defined budget. Utilize resources from other work units as needed. Work Environment Physical demands include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Typical workload: 20% sitting, 60% walking, 20% standing. Risk of injury or illness present. Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.
