The role of Utility Worker II involves semi‑skilled work to varying degrees of skilled work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of wastewater systems. Workers perform manual labor tasks including operation of light construction equipment for the construction and maintenance of wastewater collection and transmission systems. Career Advancement Pasco County provides a possible path from Utility Worker II, Utility Worker III, Wastewater System Tech III, Wastewater System Tech II, and then Wastewater System Tech I when certifications, license, experience, and performance requirements and expectations are met. Essential Job Functions Participate in the installation, maintenance, and repair of collection lines, force mains, lift stations, and plant facilities. Respond to service requests and emergency callouts for repairing and servicing routine and emergency minor and major wastewater line breaks to minimize service interruption to customers. Complete assigned daily work orders on laptop or another mobile device using asset management work order software. GPS wastewater assets. Evaluate, coordinate, and repair collection service laterals to minimize service interruption. Perform installation of new collection connections to lots where service is available, ensuring proper fall for unobstructed flow. Investigate customer complaints regarding utility systems, determine and take appropriate corrective action, and document findings and actions on work orders. Locate, record, and update information regarding wastewater collection lines, service lines, meters, and valves throughout the system to aid in effective isolation of leaks and breaks. Maintain adequate stock of materials on the assigned vehicle to ensure new connections and repairs are made efficiently. Take on‑call duty on a rotating basis to respond to after‑hour and weekend callouts. Interact with general public, contractors, and vendors in an effective and professional manner. Accurately complete daily inspection and maintenance records for vehicles and equipment. Demonstrate commitment and dependability with regular attendance, punctuality, and adherence to the schedule of availability. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and push or pull heavy objects. Perform other related tasks as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of wastewater collection and transmission systems, plumbing, or irrigation system construction and repair methods. Knowledge of tools, fittings, and equipment used in repairing and maintaining wastewater, plumbing, or irrigation systems. Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools. Skill in driving a service truck and operating line‑clearing equipment, pumps, automotive digging, backfilling, and mowing equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Accurately complete records, documents, and reports; read for comprehension and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications. Minimum Requirements Physical Skills / Working Conditions: Ability to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds and push or pull heavy objects; may use a handling device or work with another team member to move excessively heavy objects; must be able to frequently bend, climb, stoop, squat, and walk; communicate effectively using verbal, written, and visual communication; work outside under adverse conditions; perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time. Education, Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma; six (6) months of direct experience in water or reclaimed field maintenance. Licenses, Certifications or Registrations: Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license; within sixty (60) days of hire, must complete training certifications: Confined Space Entry, Excavation & Trenching, CPR, FEMA 100, and FEMA 700. NOTE: Candidates without direct water or wastewater field maintenance experience may be hired as a Utility Worker I / Trainee at a starting salary of $17.00 hourly. Candidates hired as a Trainee may be promoted to Utility Worker II upon completion of Confined Space Certification, Trenching and Shoring Certification, CPR training, FEMA 100 and FEMA 700.
