Maintenance Worker

Self Help Inc. is currently looking for a Head Start Maintenance Worker to join our team. Agency Profile Self Help, Inc. is a nonprofit Community Action Agency (CAA) created to help families and individuals stabilize and secure their lives through education, strategic assistance, and building opportunities in their communities. We provide a range of services for families and households across southeastern Massachusetts. Job Summary The Head Start Maintenance Worker is responsible for ensuring the safe, clean, and well‑maintained condition of Head Start facilities, grounds, and equipment. This position performs a variety of maintenance tasks to support a healthy and functional learning environment for preschool children and staff, adhering to Head Start Performance Standards, safety regulations, and agency policies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to buildings, including but not limited to: Carpentry (minor repairs to doors, windows, walls, furniture) Plumbing (unclogging drains, fixing minor leaks) Electrical (replacing light bulbs, resetting breakers) Painting (touch‑ups, small painting projects) Flooring (minor repairs to tiles, carpets) Maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of building interiors, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, and common areas. This may involve sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and trash removal. Maintain the exterior grounds, including but not limited to: Lawn care (mowing, trimming, weeding as needed) Snow removal and ice control on walkways and parking areas, ensuring safety for children and staff. Inspecting and testing all snow‑removing equipment. Preparing all snow‑removing equipment before snow falls or during storms. Maintenance personnel are on call during the winter season. Maintaining playground safety by inspecting equipment and performing minor repairs. General tidiness of outdoor areas, including trash and debris removal. Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on program equipment, such as furniture, appliances, and playground structures. Ensure equipment is safe and in working order. Report any major equipment malfunctions or repair needs to the supervisor. Assist with the set‑up and breakdown of equipment for events and activities. Adhere to all safety regulations, Head Start Performance Standards related to facility maintenance, and agency policies and procedures. Communicate effectively with Center Directors, staff, and supervisors regarding maintenance needs and completed work. Respond promptly to maintenance requests. Other Requirements/Certifications Must pass a criminal background check and other required clearances. Valid Massachusetts driver's license and reliable transportation (may be required for travel between sites). Must maintain EEC required certification for cleaning of bodily fluids. Must maintain Bobcat skid‑steer operator training certificate. OSHA certification. Self Help Inc will provide on‑the‑job training for certifications. Schedule Monday‑Friday, 9 AM‑5 PM. Rate of Pay $24‑$26 per hour. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to use hand and power tools safely and effectively. Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods. Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a safe and clean environment. Good problem‑solving skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience working in a childcare or educational setting is a plus. Education & Experience High School Diploma or GED equivalent. 1‑3 years of proven experience in general maintenance and repair work (e.g., building maintenance, handyman experience). Basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and painting. Self Help Inc.
