Road Patrol Deputy

Overview Position: Road Patrol Deputy Department: Sheriff Location: Branch County Sheriff's Office Schedule: Full-Time/Part-Time Full-Time; Shift: Various Shifts; Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt Open Date: 5/5/2026 Responsibilities Perform responsible law enforcement and investigation work to maintain law and order throughout the County. Monitor, report and investigate suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, unusual or illegal activity. Identify, pursue, and apprehend suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. Patrol assigned area, responding promptly to calls for assistance. Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved. Monitor traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving procedures. Issue citations or warnings to violators of motor vehicle ordinances. Take control of accident scenes to maintain traffic flow, direct traffic and establish road blocks, assist accident victims and investigate causes. Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries. Investigate traffic accidents and other accidents to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed. Testify in court to present evidence or act as a witness in traffic and criminal cases. Photograph or draw diagrams of crime or accident scenes and interview principals and eyewitnesses; record crime or accident scene evidence with video or still cameras. Relay complaint and emergency-request information to appropriate agency dispatchers; evaluate information to determine response requirements. Execute arrest warrants, locating and taking persons into custody; verify that the proper legal charges have been made against offenders. Book, search and fingerprint arrested persons as required; process prisoners and maintain records of prisoner bookings and status during booking and pre-trial process. Serve legal papers and escort prisoners to court or to state institutions. Record daily activities; prepare and submit logs and other related reports and paperwork. Provide information and assistance to the general public; provide emergency first aid and operate AED. May guard prisoners and supervise trustees; may perform specialized activities such as summer boat patrol, special assignments and public relations activities. Record facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities; perform other duties as assigned. Supervision Work is performed under the direction of the Sheriff with direct supervision by the Road Patrol Sergeant and other designated command officers (Lieutenants, Captain and Undersheriff). Experience, Skills, Education High School diploma (GED acceptable) required; Associates degree in Correctional Sciences, Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice or related field preferred. Must be at least 20 years of age and currently certified or certifiable under the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards. Reasonable work experience indicating dependability, maturity and good judgment. Knowledge of county geography; knowledge of driving rules/regulations and pertinent laws. Ability to act quickly in emergencies; strong writing, reading and mathematical skills; proficient computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook). Ability to think critically, research and problem solve; ability to prioritize and manage time; provide effective customer service; support the County's mission and values. Knowledge of basic administrative tasks: office equipment, document management, records, correspondences, meetings, minutes, and calendar management. Effective communication with management, coworkers and the public; ability to convey complex ideas through professional correspondence. Essential Abilities for All Branch County Job Classifications Predictable, reliable, and timely attendance. Ability to read, write and communicate in English; follow instructions and understand basic mathematics. Ability to interpret procedures, rules and technical information; apply with good judgment. Ability to learn from directions and mistakes; apply procedures accordingly. Discretion with sensitive information; ability to work independently or in a team. Ability to handle stress and adapt to change; communicate effectively with stakeholders. Proficient Microsoft Office skills; proficiency may be tested. Conditions of Employment Prior to starting employment, and as a continued condition of employment, must demonstrate: physical fitness; good moral character; mental fitness; and successful completion of required background checks and screenings as noted in the job description. Throughout employment, and as a condition of continued employment, must maintain: valid State of Michigan Operator's License; firearms proficiency and annual qualification; valid CPR, first aid and AED certification or complete training within 90 days; ongoing LEIN and required certifications; willingness to pursue additional credentials. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions The physical demands are representative of those required to perform the essential functions with or without accommodations. The department operates on a seven-day, 24-hour schedule; irregular hours, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime may be required. Exposure to potentially communicable diseases and bodily fluids; use of PPE. Work environment includes outdoor conditions and variable weather, with occasional office work. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to perform duties requiring physical exertion and use of equipment such as weapon, taser, and handcuffs.
