What You’ll Do (A Day in the Life) Every shift as a Lifeguard is active and fast-paced. You’ll rotate stations while keeping a sharp eye on the pool and surrounding areas, enforce safety rules, and step in quickly to assist patrons or respond to emergencies. You’ll check water conditions, help with light cleaning and setup, and spend plenty of time interacting with guests to keep the environment positive and welcoming. What We’re Looking For We’re looking for dependable, safety-focused individuals who are comfortable working with people of all ages and can stay calm under pressure. Strong communication skills and a commitment to safety are essential. Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain required lifeguard, CPR, AED, and first aid certifications. Incumbents are responsible for providing safety of guests at an aquatic facility by anticipating, recognizing, responding to and managing potentially dangerous situations including emergency situations, and in addition to instructing swim and water safety programs. REPORTING STRUCTURE Receives direction from higher-level aquatics supervisory and management staff.

1. Patrols pool area to observe activities of individuals in an aquatic facility to ensure participant safety and compliance with facility rules.
2. Provides general customer service and communicates with the public regarding fees, policies, rules and general information about the facility or event.
3. Instructs swim and water safety programs in accordance with American Red Cross standards at an aquatic facility.
4. Maintains appropriate records associated with an aquatic facility.
5. Performs tasks involved in the general operation of an aquatic facility, including physical tasks which involve moving various pieces of equipment and basic mechanical tasks.
6. Enforces facility and public health rules and regulations. Cleans aquatic facilities; performs and records chemical tests; turns fountains and related water features off and on.
7. Represents the City of Casper by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor.
8. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Knowledge (position requirements at entry) Knowledge of: Customer service principles. Basic principles and practices of safety in aquatic facilities. Swimming instruction principles. Abilities (position requirements at entry) Ability to: Work a variety of shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays as needed. Swim 200 yards without stopping, tread water for two (2) minutes without the use of arms, and retrieve a diving brick during a timed test. Instruct classes. Be flexible with assignments which may change. Plan and lead classes toward determined goals. Handle stressful working conditions including emergency situations. Work enthusiastically with groups of children. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Demonstrate leadership among groups of adults and children. Keep accurate records. Maintain a neat and professional appearance. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Follow written and verbal instructions and direction. Routinely demonstrate the City of Casper core values. Follow all City safety rules and procedures and reports all accidents/incidents immediately to supervisor. Skills (position requirements at entry) Skill in: Swimming and water safety. Instructing classes. Operating in a courteous, knowledgeable, and tactful manner with staff and general public. EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE No previous training or experience required. Must be at least 15 years of age. LICENSING and CERTIFICATIONS Current First Aid and CPR certificates required. American Red Cross Lifeguard certification required. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification preferred. If an applicant does not possess a current Lifeguard certification, completion of the City’s internal certification program for First Aid, CPR, and American Red Cross Lifeguard will be required. Applicants must pass a pre-course swim test prior to being accepted into the certification program. Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Incumbent may be subject to perform duties either indoors or outdoors, which may include extreme climate/weather conditions (warm humid indoors/unpredictable weather outdoors) and ongoing exposure to sun and pool chemicals such as chlorine. The nature of duties involves constant mental and visual attention. Incumbents in this position will be in situations where they may experience critical/traumatic events and need to have the ability to quickly move between workspaces. MINOR LABOR RESTRICTIONS 15 Years of Age Maximum hours of work on a school day: 3 hours Maximum hours of work during a school week: 18 hours Maximum hours of work on a non-school day: 8 hours Maximum hours of work during a non-school week: 40 hours Work hours: 7:00am to 7:00pm Extended to 9:00pm from June 1st through Labor Day NO operating power-driven equipment at all, on public roads or on City Grounds Includes all power-driven tools such as trimmers, weed eaters, leave blowers, etc. Includes all cars, trucks, ATVs, golf carts, riding mowers, etc. Cannot drive any vehicle (including personal) for work purposes – i.e., errands or changing work locations Cannot utilize any type of oven to reheat or cook food Cannot function as a slide monitor at the top of elevated water slides 16 Years of Age Maximum hours of work on a school day and non-school day: 8 hours Maximum hours of work during a school week and non-school week: 40 hours Work hours: 5:00am to 10:00pm on a school night Extended to 12:00am on non-school nights NO driving on public roadways, even with a valid driver’s license Cannot drive any vehicle (including personal) for work purposes - i.e., errands or changing work locations May operate ATVs, golf carts, riding mowers, etc. on City grounds ONLY (may not go on public roadways) Must meet WARM driving criteria in order to operate ATVs, golf carts, riding mowers, etc. on City grounds May operate weed eaters, leaf blowers, and the like, but no other power-driven equipment or tools 17 Years of Age Maximum hours of work on a school day and non-school day: 8 hours Maximum hours of work during a school week and non-school week: 40 hours Work hours: 5:00am to 10:00pm on a school night Extended to 12:00am on non-school nights May operate weed eaters, leaf blowers, and the like, but no other power-driven equipment or tools May operate ATVs, golf carts, riding mowers, etc. on City grounds ONLY (may not go on public roadways) Must meet WARM driving criteria in order to operate ATVs, golf carts, riding mowers, etc. on City grounds Eligible to drive vehicles (cars or light duty trucks) on public roadways with the following restrictions: Driving is limited to daylight hours Cannot have more than three (3) passengers Cannot drive more than 33% of the scheduled workday or 20% of scheduled workweek Cannot operate a vehicle over 6,000 pounds Cannot tow vehicles OR trailers Must meet strict driving eligibility criteria in order to drive on public roadways: Must have a valid Wyoming driver’s license Cannot have ANY prior moving violations Must have taken AND passed a driver's education course #J-18808-Ljbffr City of Casper
