HMS Athletic Coach (Always Accepting) Paid or Volunteer Clay County Schools Hayesville Middle School - Hayesville, North Carolina Job Description This posting is for all coaching positions (Head, Assistant, Volunteer). Determination for individual roles occurs upon approval to coach. A clear background check is required prior to approval. Coaching is seasonal and based on a contract. This is not a permanent position and does not provide any benefits or employment guarantees. Head Coach Responsibilities Reports to: Athletic Director Supervises: Assistant/Volunteer Coaches Term of Employment: Based on established athletic season Salary: Athletic Coaches' Salary Schedule or volunteer FLSA Exempt/Non‑Exempt: Non‑Exempt Minimum Qualifications: Previous experience as a coach Possession of a valid TB test and health examination issued by the local county board of health or recognized medical authority Essential Job Functions: Maintain knowledge of relevant athletic policies approved by the Clay County Schools Board of Education. Maintain knowledge of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) rules and guidelines. Interpret and enforce existing system, state, and conference regulations. Understand administrative chain of command; refer grievances through proper channels. Establish philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff. Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure awareness of overall program. Encourage professional growth and clinic attendance for staff. Delegate duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate assistants at season’s end. Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and foster morale and cooperation. Assist Athletic Director with scheduling, transportation, and tournament requirements. Prepare for scheduled sport events or practices and coordinate with maintenance and school employees. Provide documentation for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility. Ensure proper safeguards for equipment and facilities. Recommend policy or procedural changes to Athletic Director. Provide training rules and other regulations to athletes. Monitor student athletes’ grades and conduct. Attend all practices and games, offering guidance and safeguards. Develop injury and medical emergency programs. Submit paperwork for disabling injuries within 24 hours. Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians. Determine discipline and enforce due process; contact parents as needed. Assist athletes with college or advanced education selection. Participate in budgeting with Athletic Director for next season. Account for all equipment; manage fees for lost or unreturned items, inventory, and records. Manage equipment rooms and coach offices, authorizing access. Ensure locker room cleanliness and maintenance of sport equipment. Secure doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving building when custodians are not on duty. Promote sport to recruit athletes and through media. Maintain public relations with media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans. Present information to media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results. Perform any additional duties as required or assigned by supervisor. Physical and Cognitive Requirements: Operate equipment: computers, copiers, overhead projectors, data projectors. Operate a motor vehicle. Effective communication and instructions to subordinates. Respond appropriately to inquiries or complaints. Use tact and courtesy with the community. Read, comprehend, and prepare various communications. Write using prescribed formats and proper grammar. Speak before groups with poise and confidence. Apply logical, critical, creative or scientific thinking to solve problems. Demonstrate common sense in instruction and decision-making. Analyze, synthesize, and evaluate materials and situations. Follow oral and written instructions. Show professional curiosity and growth. Communicate efficiently across settings via phone and email. Recommend budgetary items for subsequent year. Authorize access to equipment rooms and coach office. Inspect locker rooms for cleanliness; maintain sport equipment cleanliness. Teach fundamentals of sport to team members. Maintain record of team statistics and lettering requirements. Attend staff meetings and scouting assignments.
