Nurse Practitioner (Full-Time)

Under the general supervision of the Medical Director, the Nurse Practitioner functions within an organized system for the delivery of health care in association with other members of the multidisciplinary health care team and performs specialized nurse practitioner duties in a clinical setting. Work is reviewed for thoroughness, accuracy, and adherence to established policies and procedures and conformity with the department’s rules and regulations. Collaborates with a physician to provide complete physical examinations, diagnosis, prescriptions, and treatment of both chronic and episodic disorders. Examines patients to evaluate health and diagnose illnesses. Identifies and manages patients with unstable chronic diseases appropriate to clinical specialty. Orders and performs diagnostic tests, such as x-rays and laboratory tests. Assess and diagnose, develop treatment plans, adjust treatments as necessary, and furnish medications. Provides urgent care to acutely ill patients. Documents medical information of patients, maintains electronic medical records and adheres to patient privacy. Counsels, educates, and instructs patients and families on presenting health problems, treatment plans, and home care. Encourages and promotes preventative health care and positive health behaviors. Participates in staff meetings and conferences regarding patient care, as well as quality improvement/control activities. Requests consultation or referral with other health care providers, such as physicians and clinics. Maintains current medical research and trends and supports research projects. Performs other related duties as required. Necessary Special Qualifications Possession of a valid Nurse Practitioner license issued by the Virgin Islands Board of Nurse Licensure Possession of a national board certification, or eligibility as a Nurse Practitioner issued by a recognized national certifying body or organization. Current Basic Life Support certification. Master of Science degree from an accredited graduate school in nursing with two (2) years of clinical work experience.

Knowledge of well-established examination procedures of individuals. Knowledge of diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation principles and techniques. Knowledge of drugs/medication appropriate for adults and their side-effects. Skill in performing physical examinations. Skill in computer operating applications. Skill in analytical and critical thinking. Skill in active listening. Skill in decision-making. Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality and trust with patients and records. Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other medical staff. Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate individual patient care programs. Ability to perform patient assessment and triage. Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.

FACTOR 2 – SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

Work is performed under the direction of the Medical Director. Nurse Practitioner is expected to work independently with minimal supervision and collaborate with other members of the clinical team to plan and recommend treatment plans for positive patient outcomes. Work is reviewed to determine that objectives are met and for compliance with federal and local agency policies and regulations.

FACTOR 3 – GUIDELINES

Guidelines include Department Policies and Procedures, Federal and local laws, and regulations, HIPAA, CPR, ACLS, and regulatory standards for primary health and preventive care. Guidelines are strictly enforced and there is little or no room for interpretation or adaptation under various circumstances.

FACTOR 4 – COMPLEXITY

Work involves assuring patients that proposed treatment plans are the best option for them. Work can be both difficult and demanding, especially when it requires various levels of care.

FACTOR 5 – SCOPE AND EFFECT

The purpose of work is to uphold the department's mission, goals, and objectives, with a focus on delivering quality clinical care interactions and service to the population served.

FACTOR 6 – PERSONAL CONTACTS

Contacts are patients, clinical care services team members, co-workers, external health professionals, other agency team members, executive staff, external agencies (i.e., federal, and private), affiliate groups and agencies specifically focused on primary health care.

FACTOR 7 – PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

Contacts are made to advise, provide, and obtain meaningful information, diagnose, and treat conditions, or tap into resources necessary to ensure that quality primary care services are rendered.

FACTOR 8 – PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires light physical effort including lifting, standing, walking back and forth between service areas, climbing, balancing, stooping, and kneeling.

FACTOR 9 – WORK ENVIRONMENT
