Assistant Research Scientist (Toxic Substances)

Assistant Research Scientist Health Research, Inc. seeks an Assistant Research Scientist to work within the Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment (BTSA), New York State Department of Health. The role focuses on improving school environmental health through the NY State School Environmental Health Program. The incumbent will work with schools—public, private, tribal, and disadvantaged—to understand and implement best practices for indoor air quality, reducing exposures and supporting healthy learning environments. Compensation Compensation Grade: P14 Minimum: $56,025.00 - Maximum: $56,025.00 Annually Positions with a designated work location in New York City, Nassau, Rockland, Suffolk, or Westchester Counties will receive a $4,000 annual downstate adjustment (pro-rated for part-time positions). Department (OPH) CEH – Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment Responsibilities Assist state and local partners and school district personnel to improve awareness of school environmental health issues. Collaborate with schools to assess indoor air quality and prepare technical reports summarizing findings. Develop and present technical materials on controlling, reducing, and eliminating exposures in schools. Support additional program focus areas such as climate action and water quality. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related field and one year of research experience; OR a Master’s degree in a related field. Preferred Qualifications Degree and/or experience in industrial hygiene or public health Academic or working knowledge and understanding of indoor air quality Experience collecting or working with environmental data, such as air sampling data Working knowledge of the effects of chemicals and materials on the body and the environment Knowledge of federal and state building regulations Experience working in or with K‑12 schools Experience working with a multidisciplinary group of professionals Experience communicating, both verbally and in writing, with a variety of audiences Experience preparing technical reports or other data‑driven or science‑based resources/materials Strong organizational skills Conditions of Employment This is a grant‑funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables is required. Visa sponsorship may be available in accordance with applicable federal requirements. Travel up to 10% of the time will be required. The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Work Location Expectations Hybrid and onsite work varies by position. Managers determine the telecommuting expectations based on operational needs and responsibilities. For hybrid roles, time is divided between remote work and onsite reporting.
