About SWCOA

Southwest Center on Aging is a geriatric primary care practice in Las Cruces dedicated to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care to older adults. Operating under a value-based (MSSP/ACO) care model, our team of physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants serves approximately 800 patients with a focus on proactive, coordinated care that improves quality of life and health outcomes for seniors.

Position Summary

SWCOA is seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Medical Assistant to support our clinical team in delivering high-quality care to our geriatric patient population. The ideal candidate has experience working with older adults, is comfortable in a fast-paced primary care setting, and takes pride in providing patients with a warm, respectful, and efficient visit experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Room patients and prepare them for provider visits, including obtaining and recording vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, weight, oxygen saturation)
• Take and document patient histories, current medications, and reason for visit in the EHR
• Assist providers during examinations and procedures as needed
• Perform basic clinical tasks such as EKGs, phlebotomy, injections, and point-of-care testing per provider order and scope of practice
• Coordinate referrals, prior authorizations, and specialist appointments
• Manage patient flow to keep clinic schedule on time
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record
• Communicate with patients and families regarding care plans, medication instructions, and follow-up needs
• Assist with care coordination tasks related to Chronic Care Management (CCM) and Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) programs
• Restock and maintain exam rooms and clinical supplies; ensure proper sterilization and infection control procedures
• Support front-office staff with check-in/check-out during high-volume periods as needed
• Handle patient and specimen information in compliance with HIPAA and practice confidentiality policies

Qualifications

Required:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program, or equivalent relevant clinical experience
• Current CPR/BLS certification
• Strong communication skills and a patient, empathetic demeanor suited to working with elderly patients and their families
• Proficiency with electronic health record (EHR) systems
• Ability to multitask and stay organized in a busy clinical environment

Preferred:

• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) credential
• Prior experience in geriatrics, internal medicine, or a value-based care/ACO practice setting
• Bilingual (English/Spanish)
• Experience with phlebotomy and EKG administration
