Behavioral Wellness Counselor

Duties and Responsibilities: Performs complex work in the planning, organizing, and daily management of Henderson County's employee behavioral health and wellness program. Provides confidential counseling services to employees as requested or needed; collaborates with internal and external agencies to provide counseling resources to employees; Collaborates with other counseling and wellness staff; Providing confidential in-office counseling services and on-site support at scenes of trauma; Integrates with various work environments to build trust relationships with public safety employees and provide immediate access to counseling services; Ensures availability 24/7 to all employees to address mental health and wellbeing concerns; Develops and implements effective suicide prevention and mental health resiliency program. Work is performed under general supervision. Reports to the Wellness Clinic Director.


Qualifications: Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of mental health counseling, crisis intervention, and critical incident debriefing; Thorough working knowledge of HIPAA regulations and medical record confidentiality; thorough knowledge of public safety and other high stress work environments; proficiency with computers and software programs required by the position such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic medical record; ability to research, analyze and make recommendations; ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary team efforts; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing and prepare and conduct presentations; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to exercise tact to interact with other agencies and members of the public; ability to safely and efficiently operate emergency vehicles; ability to attend work regularly.


Education and experience equivalent to master's degree in counseling, psychology, or mental-health related program from an accredited college or university; or certification as psychiatric nurse practitioner; supplemented by course work in various public safety disciplines such as emergency management, disaster responsiveness, crisis intervention and suicide prevention and considerable experience in crisis counseling and behavioral health. EMDR training preferred. Excellent interpersonal skills required and ability to work as a team.


Must possess valid North Carolina driver's license. North Carolina professional licenses and certifications associated with master's degree or nurse practitioner designation required. Certification as Addictions Counselor desirable.
