Behavioral Health Intern

SUMMARY: Under the direction of Clinical Manager (Inpatient)/Program Director (Partial/Residential), the Behavioral Health Intern (BHI) is responsible for providing care and safety to children and adolescents as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. The BHI is responsible for input into the formulation of the day‑to‑day schedule and structure of a therapeutic milieu and for the implementation, observation, and documentation of this program under the direction of the program/shift lead. RESPONSIBILITIES
Participate in maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment and actively engage with assigned children throughout the shift. Contribute to the development and operationalization of the milieu care plan for assigned patients according to established procedures and policies. Maintain and document level of patient observation as ordered by the physician and provide support to visiting parents as requested by the treatment team. Supervise assigned children in daily routines, assist with activities of daily living, and maintain appropriate boundaries. Identify, report, and resolve potential problems on the unit and demonstrate appropriate critical incident follow‑up skills by timely verbal reporting to charge RN or Shift Leader and documenting in the medical record. Carry out daily assignments, report back prior to change of shift, and intervene in disruptive or self‑harmful situations with timely therapeutic intervention. Adhere to hospital, departmental, and program policies and procedures. Actively participate in the patient care planning process under the direction of the primary/charge RN or shift lead, support initial therapeutic alliance with patient and family, and assist with the separation process. Within the 8‑hour shift, document objective observations within a shift note and share observations with assigned RN/Shift Lead. Review milieu care plan and problem list daily, suggest revisions based on observations, and communicate plans to other unit staff including interdisciplinary providers. Participate in treatment team rounds, patient‑specific discussions, hand‑off shift reports, and accurate documentation of significant patient/family observations on the Kardex and medical records. Offer knowledge acquired through experience to other staff via formal or informal staff development forums and adapt care to meet the needs of various child/adolescent patients. Support and contribute to the development of care plans and behavioral management, assist and teach patients in activities of daily living and personal hygiene, and co‑lead community meetings, milieu meetings, social skill groups, and program‑specific groups. Demonstrate ability to set consistent and supportive therapeutic limits within hospital, unit, and departmental guidelines. Follow behavioral programs specific to the patient’s needs in collaboration with the assigned RN/Shift Lead and treatment team, organize unit activities, coordinate, supervise, and actively participate in children’s physical and social development activities, arrange transportation of materials, and participate in teaching visits, family, and parent training as assigned. Model appropriate and therapeutic staff‑patient interactions, co‑lead therapy groups with a clinician, support recreation therapy programs, and handle crisis situations safely using the least restrictive methods. Take initiative to seek formal and informal supervision and incorporate suggestions for improvement. Perform other related duties as required, assigned, or directed by Charge RN/shift lead. Travel to other clinical settings within the hospital system as program needs arise.BASIC KNOWLEDGE
Current certification in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association. Current matriculation in an accredited Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in human services, with completed coursework in psychology and social sciences (preferred). Associate’s Degree (AD) program candidates may also be considered. Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients across the life span, considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns. Bradley Hospital Safety Care Specialist Certification provided upon orientation. Ability to remain calm during crisis situations, make quick rational decisions, prioritize immediate patient care needs, and maintain a therapeutic environment. Capability to physically manage patients, including safe body positioning, blocking and deflecting aggression, and physically holding struggling patients up to fifty pounds for brief periods, as well as running short distances and frequent standing, walking, and sitting.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Current matriculation in an accredited Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in human services with completed coursework in psychology and social sciences (preferred). Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse or Program Supervisor within the scope of hospital and department policies and procedures. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor when clarification of program policies is required.
