Instructional Assistant

JOB DESCRIPTION: Instructional Assistant (IA) is a full-time,10+ month, M-F 7:30 AM-4:00 PM role. The goal of an IA is to support designated classroom teachers, administrators, and staff to ensure that the school day runs smoothly and effectively. This support takes a variety of forms. Examples include helping students stay on task and assisting them with assigned work, assisting with grading, monitoring students (e.g., at lunch or recess), filling in where and when necessary, running copies, testing, providing support in the classroom, front desk and any additional tasks assigned to support the educational environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support classroom systems/procedures and help manage student behavior to ensure all students are fully engaged in learning

● Support instruction and assessment under the direction of teachers

● Comply with all relevant school policies and state and federal laws and regulations

● Help classroom teacher(s) create an atmosphere characterized by order, respect and joy. Assisting in the cultivation of good habits among the students through explicit instruction and example.

● May help track critical student information and maintain accurate student records, including attendance, in accordance with procedures.

● Identify student needs and collaborate with other team members to best meet needs of students to improve instructional practices

● Assist with planning and executing differentiated instruction for students with a variety of needs.

● Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, mission, vision, value statements, standards, virtues, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior

• Be a team player, collaborate with co-workers

● Perform other related duties as required and assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required knowledge, skills & abilities:

● Knowledge of child cognitive development and different learning styles

● Ability and willingness to support and implement Instructional Guidelines and Best Practices

● Ability and willingness to be coached, reflect and improve

● Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate with colleagues, administrators, parents and community

Minimum educational level:

Possession of high school diploma or equivalent

Preferred-Associate’s degree, college or successful completion of certificate or testing

Preferred-Instructional, Teaching or experience in related field

Experience required:

1+ year working with students as a teacher, teacher intern, or teaching assistant/aide

☒ Stand, walk or bend over, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, and pull. Move, lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds to shoulder height.

☒ Repetitive use of hands (i.e. fine manipulation, simple grasping, and power grasping).

☒ Demonstrate normal depth perception.

☒ Sitting, walking or standing for extended periods of time.

☒ Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, operate standard office equipment, and use a telephone

☒ See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids.

☒ Read and understand rules and policies, labels, and instructions.

☒ Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone.

☒ Verbal communications, including the ability to speak and hear at normal room levels and on the telephone.

Work environment:

The work environment characteristics are representative of those in a normal office, classroom/school setting which one might encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.

☒ Work indoors in a standard office environment, computer lab, and/or classroom environment. Lunch, recess, arrival and dismissal duties as assigned

☒ Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments.

☒ Exposure to dust, oils, and cleaning chemicals.

☒ May be required to work outside of school hours, some summer hours and office hours to meet operational deadlines.
