Snapshot / Role Overview

We're seeking a Mechanical Estimator in Greater Hartford, CT to lead HVAC and plumbing estimates from concept through bid for a full-service commercial mechanical contractor backed by a national mechanical services platform.

Impact

• Own the bid from takeoff to submission on medium and large commercial, institutional, and industrial projects.
• Set the company up to win the right work at the right margin.
• Hand project management a clean, well-documented budget at turnover.
• Mentor junior estimators and sharpen the estimating process.

Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed labor, material, equipment, and subcontractor estimates for commercial HVAC, plumbing, and piping projects.
• Review drawings, specifications, contracts, and scope documents; perform quantity takeoffs and pricing analysis.
• Solicit, review, and level subcontractor and supplier bids.
• Identify risks, opportunities, and value-engineering options.
• Lead bid reviews and support bid strategy decisions.
• Maintain estimating databases, cost histories, and benchmarks.
• Attend pre-bid meetings, scope reviews, and site walks.
• Support proposal preparation, bid submissions, and post-bid handoff to project management.
• Track labor rates, material costs, and subcontractor performance.

Compensation and Logistics

$70,000 to $110,000 base depending on experience. Medical, dental, vision, HSA, short- and long-term disability, life, 401(k), and PTO. Full-time, on-site in Greater Hartford, CT; extended hours during bid deadlines. Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Must-Haves

• 5+ years of construction estimating experience with proven results on medium to large projects.
• Estimating background on commercial HVAC, plumbing, or piping scopes.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
• Proficiency with estimating software such as Trimble AutoBid, On-Screen Takeoff, PlanSwift, or Bluebeam, plus advanced Excel.
• Strong analytical, negotiation, and communication skills; accurate under bid deadlines.

Nice-to-Haves

• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
• Design-build or alternative delivery experience.
• BIM/CAD familiarity.
• Experience mentoring junior estimators.
