South Burlington School District Position Description Job Title: Transportation Van Driver

Reports To: Transportation Department Supervisor
Summary: Responsible for the safe operation of a school van (less than 16 driver/passengers) while transporting students to assigned locations. May assist students while loading and unloading a vehicle.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (other duties may be assigned)
General Responsibilities: Performs all job assignments in a safe and responsible way at all times. Presents a neat, clean, and appropriately dressed manner. The ability to work in a collaborative team environment is essential to the employee's successful job performance. Demonstrated ongoing commitment to workplace diversity, sustainability, and delivering exceptional customer service.
Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are typical of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience : Must be a high school graduate, or have a General Educational Development Diploma (GED). Previous experience with transporting passengers or light truck delivery desired.
Licenses and/or Certificates: Valid Vermont Driver's License with clean record. CDL preferred, but not required. Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certificate (CPR); Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) certificate; and First Aid Certification is required. Drivers must qualify for a DOT medical card.
Language Skills : Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, lists, and documents such as safety rules, maps, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to develop and write routine and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information one-on-one, and in small group situations.
Mathematical Skills : Ability to apply basic math skills: addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication and weight, measurement, volume, and distance.
Reasoning Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students, staff, and others by demonstrating patience, kindness, and courtesy. Ability to read and understand maps. Ability to pass state driver's license skill test. Ability to manage students and equipment. Ability to observe student behavior and advise supervisors of concerns and/or issues. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and School Board policies. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Board policies as they relate to the job responsibilities is essential.
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are typical of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations, as defined by the District, may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, see, drive, hear, climb and descend steps. Occasionally, the incumbent will walk, stand, and reach forward and above with hands and arms, bend or twist at the neck and trunk, and must occasionally squat, carry, lift and/or move up to 90 pounds, such as assisting students. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, depth perception, and peripheral vision. The employee is required to travel to other work locations and be exposed to various weather conditions. The incumbent must demonstrate manual dexterity to operate a vehicle. The incumbent must meet insurability conditions for employment by the District's liability insurance carrier.
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
While performing the duties of the job, the employee works inside and outside, with a variance in temperatures and will occasionally walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with time constraints and interact with students, staff members and members of the public. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to loud.

Evaluation : Performance will be evaluated at least annually by the Transportation Coordinator according to the stated performance objectives and the qualities and characteristics contained on the evaluation form.

- Operates vehicles in a safe manner and in keeping with applicable driving laws. Reports problems with vehicle and/or driving hazards to supervisor.
- Responsible for the safety and security of assigned students while transporting to various locations.
- Ensures that the vehicle is properly cleaned and maintained; keeps vehicle hazard free, cooperates to keep co-workers and students safe.
- Works safely within established guidelines for safe lifting techniques.
- Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule.
- May assist, as necessary, in other areas of transportation.
