As a Veterinary Assistant, you'll play a vital role in helping animals receive the medical care they need while supporting a team dedicated to improving the lives of pets and the people who love them.Whether you're assisting with surgeries, providing hands-on patient care, administering medications, or helping animals recover and heal, your work will have a direct impact on thousands of animals each year.What You'll DoAs a Veterinary Assistant, you'll support our veterinarians and veterinary team by providing compassionate medical care and ensuring high standards of treatment for animals in our shelter and surgery programs.Key responsibilities include:Assisting veterinarians during examinations and treatmentsSafely restraining and handling animals during medical proceduresAdministering medications and treatments as directedCalculating medication dosages accuratelyMonitoring and communicating patient status and medical concernsAssisting with surgical preparation, patient recovery, and post-operative careMaintaining accurate medical records and entering data into shelter softwareCleaning kennels and providing daily animal careRestocking medical and surgical suppliesAssisting with humane euthanasia procedures when necessaryWorking collaboratively with shelter staff, volunteers, and other departments to support positive outcomes for animalsWhat We're Looking ForSuccessful candidates are:Passionate about animal welfare and HSPPR's missionCompassionate, patient, and professional when working with animals and peopleComfortable handling animals of varying sizes, temperaments, and medical conditionsDetail-oriented and committed to maintaining accurate recordsAble to prioritize tasks and work effectively in a fast-paced environmentStrong communicators who work well as part of a teamQualificationsRequired:High School Diploma, GED, or equivalentAbility to read, write, communicate effectively, perform basic math, and solve routine problemsPreferred:Previous animal handling experienceExperience in a veterinary clinic, shelter, or animal care environmentPhysical RequirementsThis is an active, hands-on role that requires:Standing and walking for extended periodsFrequent lifting and moving of animals and equipment weighing 25+ pounds and occasionally 40+ poundsWorking around animals, animal allergens, cleaning agents, and varying environmental conditionsFrequent bending, kneeling, reaching, and crouchingScheduleFull -time scheduleRegular schedule includes at least one weekend dayOccasional evening, holiday, and additional weekend work may be required based on organizational needsWhy Join HSPPR?At HSPPR, you're more than an employee-you're part of a mission-driven team dedicated to saving lives, strengthening the human-animal bond, and serving our community.
