Custodian/Traffic DirectorSchool/Department: Transportation/Assigned School(s)Salary: Custodian=17.38 per hr/Traffic Director=16.55 per hr.FLSA Status: Non-ExemptReports To: Principal, Director of Transportation or Assistant DirectorSupervises: NoneWork Week Schedule: Monday - FridayWork Hours: Varies (Maximum 20 hours per week)Number of Months Per Year: 10Position Purpose:The Traffic Director is responsible for crossing students safely at dedicated and marked crosswalks at intersections while utilizing proper safety procedures.Custodian: Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping working the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash receptacles and pick up debris, etcKnowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesBasic knowledge of traffic safety regulationsBasic knowledge of safe crossing techniquesBasic knowledge of safe behavior expectationsKnowledge of basic chain of command for reporting concerns, violations of policies, complaints, and/or safety hazardsKnowledge of locations and purposes of street traffic signs within assigned patrol areasAbility to discern situations that could impact the safety of students and to address them immediately and effectivelyAbility to communicate effectively with students, adults and members of the communityAbility to follow directions and to communicate effectively orally and in writingAbility to learn responsibilities within the first week of employmentGeneral knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work.Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials.Ability to follow instructions.Ability to perform medium physical workEducation, Training, and ExperienceEducation and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GEDMust be 18 or overAny equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilitiesCertification and License RequirementsMust possess a valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor VehiclesPreferred Qualifications:CPR and/or First Aid Training and/or CertificationEssential Duties and ResponsibilitiesMonitor traffic flow to appropriately assist traffic onto and off ABSS properties while maintaining the fluidity of streets / highways.Direct vehicular movement using appropriate signs, flags, lanterns, and hand signals.Guide or control vehicular and pedestrian traffic on streets / highways as applicable.Report unsafe behavior of students to school administrators.Report and discuss performance, complaints, or violations with supervisor(s).Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals; report infractions to the school's SRO.Distribute traffic control signs and markers at designated points, as needed.Discuss traffic routing plans and control point locations with school administrators.Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation.Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal, Transportation Director, or Assistant DirectorSweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes and buffs floor surfaces.Cleans restroom areas and replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary.Cleans windows, walls, doors, woodwork, supply vents and return vents, blinds and light fixtures.Dusts and cleans desks and other furniture.Empties trash receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles.Sweeps sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; polices grounds, picking up debris; shovels snow and/or applies de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways, as necessaryReplaces burned-out light bulbs. Replaces ceiling tiles.Change ceiling tiles as necessary while standing on a ladder.Prepares requisition forms to obtain necessary supplies for coming workweek.Sets traps for rodents and other pests, appropriately discarding trapped animals.Performs minor maintenance on appliances, as abilities allow.
