The Lead Facilities Technician oversees the daily maintenance operations of a children's educational facility and provides hands-on leadership to a team of five maintenance employees. This role ensures the building and grounds remain safe, clean, and fully operational while supporting a secure, welcoming environment for children, staff, and visitors. The position combines technical expertise in building systems with strong leadership, organization, and a commitment to safety and service.
Responsibilities
Lead, supervise, and mentor a team of five maintenance staff members, providing guidance, support, and performance feedback.
Assign and prioritize daily work orders, preventive maintenance tasks, and facility projects to ensure timely completion.
Perform and oversee maintenance and repairs of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, lighting, and mechanical systems throughout the facility.
Conduct routine inspections of classrooms, common areas, playgrounds, and outdoor spaces to identify and address maintenance needs.
Ensure compliance with all safety regulations, building codes, and organizational policies in all maintenance activities.
Respond promptly to facility emergencies and maintenance service requests to minimize disruption and maintain safety.
Maintain a safe environment for children, employees, and visitors at all times by proactively identifying and mitigating hazards.
Coordinate vendor services, contractors, and facility improvement projects, including scheduling and oversight of work performed.
Monitor inventory levels and order maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment as needed to support ongoing operations.
Develop and maintain preventive maintenance schedules to maximize equipment reliability and extend asset life.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, and work order documentation using work order management or CMMS systems.
Assist with facility renovations, furniture installations, and space reconfigurations to support evolving program needs.
Participate in after-hours and on-call support as needed to address urgent maintenance issues.
Perform general facilities maintenance tasks such as carpentry, drywall repair, painting, cleaning, and minor structural repairs.
Troubleshoot and repair boilers, chillers, rooftop units, cooling towers, and other building systems using schematics and technical documentation.
Demonstrate strong customer service when interacting with staff, students, and visitors, clearly communicating maintenance activities and timelines.
Essential Skills
4+ years of facilities maintenance experience in a multi-system building environment.
2+ years of experience leading or supervising maintenance personnel or a facilities team.
Hands-on experience with HVAC systems, including troubleshooting and repair of boilers, chillers, rooftop units, and cooling towers.
Practical experience with electrical systems, including electrical troubleshooting and basic repairs.
Practical experience with plumbing systems, including diagnosis and repair of common issues.
Working knowledge of mechanical and general building systems, including lighting and basic structural components.
Experience performing general facilities maintenance, including carpentry, drywall repair, painting, and cleaning.
Demonstrated ability to perform preventive maintenance on building systems and equipment.
Experience troubleshooting building equipment and facility-related issues using schematics and technical documentation.
Experience using work order management or CMMS systems to track, prioritize, and document maintenance activities.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced environment.
Effective verbal and written communication skills for coordinating with staff, vendors, and contractors.
Ability to lead, supervise, and mentor a maintenance team, including assigning work and monitoring performance.
Knowledge of building safety standards, regulations, and codes relevant to facility operations.
Experience coordinating vendor services and contractors for maintenance and facility improvement projects.
Ability to respond effectively to emergencies and manage maintenance-related incidents.
Valid driver's license.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working in a school, childcare, or youth-focused facility environment.
Demonstrated customer service skills when supporting internal stakeholders and facility users.
Experience developing and managing preventive maintenance schedules for complex facilities.
Familiarity with facilities maintenance leadership best practices.
Comfort working both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Ability to interpret and work from technical schematics, manuals, and diagrams.

Work Environment

The position involves regular interaction with children and educators, so professionalism, discretion, and a calm, service-oriented demeanor are essential. The work includes hands-on tasks with HVAC systems, electrical and plumbing infrastructure, mechanical equipment, boilers, chillers, rooftop units, and cooling towers, often requiring the use of tools, ladders, and standard maintenance equipment. Hours may include occasional after-hours or on-call support to address urgent issues. Attire should be practical and appropriate for maintenance work in a school setting, with an emphasis on safety and a neat, presentable appearance.
