Food Service Specialist I (Cafeteria Hot Line Server) Client: Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina (BCBSSC) Department: Food Service Operations Location: Columbia, SC Position Type: Full-Time Contract Schedule: Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM–2:00 PM Pay Rate: Up to $14.18/hour Work Location: 100% Onsite Position Overview Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina is seeking a dependable and customer-focused Food Service Specialist I to support daily cafeteria operations. This position is primarily focused on serving customers on the cafeteria hot line while assisting with food preparation, stocking, sanitation, and general food service duties as needed. The ideal candidate enjoys working in a fast-paced food service environment, demonstrates excellent customer service skills, and takes pride in maintaining food quality, cleanliness, and safety standards. Key Responsibilities Food Preparation & Service Prepare and serve food in accordance with established recipes, procedures, and food safety guidelines. Operate food preparation and serving equipment safely and efficiently. Provide exceptional customer service while serving guests on the cafeteria hot line. Assist with catering deliveries and special food service events as needed. Minimize food waste and production errors by following proper preparation and portioning procedures. Inventory & Stocking Restock food, beverages, supplies, and service areas throughout the day. Rotate stock and properly label food items and containers according to food safety standards. Monitor inventory levels and notify management of replenishment needs. Cleaning & Sanitation Maintain cleanliness of food preparation, serving, and dining areas. Clean and sanitize equipment, utensils, and workstations. Follow established sanitation and safety procedures. Exercise preventative measures to minimize slip, trip, and fall hazards. Additional Duties Operate as cashier when assigned. Assist with dishwashing and pot-washing duties as needed. Support team members across multiple food service areas. Report equipment malfunctions or maintenance concerns to management promptly. Perform additional duties as assigned to support departmental operations. Required Qualifications Education No specific education requirement. Experience Prior food service, cafeteria, restaurant, hospitality, or customer service experience is preferred but not required. Required Skills & Competencies Strong customer service and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in multiple food service functions. Good organizational and time-management skills. Sound judgment and attention to detail. Basic business math skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Ability to stand for extended periods and perform routine physical duties associated with food service operations. Work Environment Cafeteria and food service environment. Fast-paced, customer-facing role. Frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, and cleaning activities. Strict adherence to food safety and sanitation procedures required. This role is specifically supporting cafeteria operations as a Hot Line Server . Outstanding customer service skills are essential for success in this position.
