Assistant United States Attorney

The United States Attorney's Office (USAO) for the Northern District of West Virginia (NDWV) prosecutes federal offenses, defends the United States Government's interests, and affirms claims on behalf of the government in civil cases. The office has 47 employees and contractors and maintains offices in Wheeling, Clarksburg, Elkins, and Martinsburg. Responsibilities Engage in challenging and important litigation in the Criminal Division with emphasis on Public Safety, National Security, and Immigration Enforcement. Handle your own caseload and conduct trials and appeals independently. Take on increasingly complex assignments as training and experience progress. Qualifications J.D. degree (or equivalent) and active membership of a bar in any U.S. jurisdiction by your entry on duty date. Law school graduates and current law students taking the July 2026 bar examination may be considered. U.S. citizenship. Demonstrated personal integrity, good judgment, analytical ability, and excellent organizational, interpersonal, and litigation skills. Willingness to follow rules and directives and to work professionally with attorneys, support staff, and client agencies. Preferred Qualifications Commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Impeccable integrity. Outstanding organizational, time‑management, and interpersonal skills. Aptitude for independent legal research and writing, and the ability to prepare correspondence and pleadings with accuracy and minimal supervision. Excellent computer literacy and ability to handle all aspects of electronic discovery and litigation. Requirements United States citizen or national. Registered for Selective Service, if applicable. Must reside in the district to which you are appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Temporary position not to exceed September 30, 2029; may be extended or made permanent without further competition. Security Requirements Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which they are appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Salary Assistant United States Attorney pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The basic pay range is $79,351 to $186,185.
