Seasonal Overnight Campsite Inventory Technician

Organizational Mission: The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. Position Summary The Seasonal Overnight Campsite Inventory Technician reports directly to the Data Manager. This position supports ATC’s Sustainable Overnight Site (SOS) Program, a key initiative marking a benchmark in the Appalachian Trail’s second century of stewardship. Working independently, the technician will systematically apply ATC’s campsite inventory protocol to evaluate all discernible overnight sites both user‑created and ATC‑ or partner‑endorsed—along two primary sections of the Appalachian Trail: from I‑26 near Asheville, NC, to Damascus, VA, and from northern New Jersey to Katahdin, ME. A professional Recreation Ecologist will provide comprehensive training, and each technician will receive a campsite inventory kit. Backpacking will be necessary to effectively reach and assess all areas within the designated trail sections. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Independently conduct comprehensive evaluations of all overnight sites using ATC’s campsite inventory protocol. Record and compile data using the RIMS app on a smartphone or provided tablet in real time. Report progress weekly (or more frequently if needed) to ATC’s Visitor Use Management staff, Regional Managers, and Recreation Ecologist, ensuring all data are reviewed for accuracy and completeness. Communicate in advance with A.T. Club members, ATC Regional Managers, and agency partner staff listed in the contact list provided prior to conducting inventory work within their assigned Trail areas. Gather relevant background information on inventory locations from A.T. management partners. Foster strong collaboration with all A.T. partners by encouraging their participation and providing campsite inventory training where appropriate. Coordinate logistics such as inventory scheduling, shuttles, and communication needs in a timely and professional manner. Demonstrate and promote Leave No Trace principles at all times. Maintain campsite inventory equipment in proper working order, including appropriate bear‑resistant food storage practices. Adhere to safety procedures and follow established check‑in/check‑out protocols during fieldwork. Qualifications Coursework or academic background in environmental studies, recreation management, natural resources management, forestry, or a related discipline is preferred. Demonstrated commitment to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s (ATC) management and resource protection goals. Self‑motivated and capable of working effectively with minimal supervision. Physically able to hike up to 10 miles per day across steep, mountainous terrain. Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with individuals, groups, and partner organizations. Able to live and work independently in remote areas with limited oversight. Capable of backpacking while carrying necessary work and camping gear. Willing and able to camp for at least four consecutive nights along the Appalachian Trail. Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods in challenging or adverse weather conditions. Proven hiking and outdoor experience. Experience in collaborating with volunteers from diverse ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Familiarity with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s cooperative management system preferred. Physical Demands and Work Environment May be exposed to hazardous physical conditions and seasonal exposure to extreme weather conditions, including rain, snow, humidity, intense heat, and sunlight. Must be able to hike for extended periods and perform routine moderate lifting carrying up to 50 pounds in a backpack over a minimum of five miles through rough, uneven terrain, and wet, and slippery surfaces. Long days in the field and weekend work, typically 40 hours per week. Possible exposure to ticks and pests, extreme weather, and hazards typical of a backcountry environment. Regular use of electronic devices is required. Occasional computer use is required, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, Office 365, NPS database, ADP, NetSuite, RIMS, and Google applications. Additional Details: Term Length: Approximately June 2, 2026 – September 30, 2026. Hourly Rate: $18.00 – $20.00 Housing Stipend: $500 Housing Stipend may be provided if applicant meets criteria. Per Diem for Nights on the Trail. Location/Region required to work from: NC and New England. Must have a valid driver’s license and use of a reliable personal vehicle. Benefits: 1 hour of sick time per 30 hours worked.
