Reading Interventionist

Purpose: The purpose of the school based Reading Interventionist is to work alongside academic coaches in overseeing and supporting the creation of evidence based school level literacy plans. The role of the reading interventionist will also include serving the students who fall in the strategic and intensive support areas of need as shown by student data on the universal screening measures for reading.


Professional characteristics of the school-based Reading Interventionist:

• Deep knowledge of reading research and content as well as pedagogy
• Always conduct oneself in a professional manner
• Keep student data secure and limit the discussion of student data to those in need of the information (parents, teachers, administrators)
• Deep knowledge of the Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE) in the area of reading and literacy
• Deep knowledge of Teacher Keys Effectiveness System (TKES), specifically standards 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 10 (Professional Knowledge, Instructional Planning, Instructional Strategies, Differentiated Instruction, Assessment Uses, Positive Learning Environment, and Communication)
• Ability to work well with struggling learners
• Proficient in the use of data from diagnostic assessments
• Proficient in the use of technology and reporting systems for reading data
• Proficient in the use of diagnostic assessments to evaluate root causes for student weaknesses

Duties and Responsibilities of the School Based Reading Interventionist:

• Create and nurture a productive learning environment for students
• Plan and deliver targeted instruction based on identified student needs
• Conduct periodic progress monitoring for students being served using diagnostic assessments
• Attend student/parent conferences and speak to progress or lack of progress using data from progress monitoring and diagnostic assessments and/or probes
• Coordinate Community Read Program for the school
• Keep a data notebook with data pertaining to students served in reading intervention
• Every two weeks inform classroom teachers of students served and their progress
• Provide tier 2 and 3 reading and writing interventions
• Provide professional learning in the area of reading as directed by the district MTSS and/or Curriculum Director

Additional Duties

- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment

- Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

- Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.

- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.

- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.

- Extensive knowledge of

- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.

- Ability to organize and coordinate work.

- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.

- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

- Works in standard office and school building environments.

Certification/License:

- GaPSC certification in Early Childhood Education


- GaPSC reading endorsement (preferred)

- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.

Education

- Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment

- Masters Degree preferred

Experience

- Successful prior teaching experience in grades PK-5 preferred

FLSA Status: Exempt

190 day contract
Placement on the DCS Salary Schedule based on GaPSC certification and verified years of experience
