Job Overview:
- The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
- Experience performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, and updating patient information.
- Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explains the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection in a clear and courteous manner.
- Demonstrates techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Fully understands all physician orders.
- Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Labels, centrifuges, splits, and freezes specimens as required by test orders.
- Checks all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
- Packages specimens for transport.
- Stores specimen samples according to required temperature and appropriate collection containers.
- Understands and complies with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attends annual department trainings.
- Answers telephone calls and reads laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 2-4 years of experience.
