Junior Software Engineer

The Junior Software Engineer will work closely with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and other partners to help modernize legacy oceanographic systems by transitioning them into a scalable, event-driven microservices architecture. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with modern tech stacks, distributed systems, and rigorous Agile software development practices in a defense environment. Job Duties Develop, test, and maintain containerized microservices that process real-time sensor data. Assist in building web-based user interfaces and dashboards for the new Command and Control (C2) suite. Write and execute database queries, assisting with the migration of legacy system data to a unified PostgreSQL environment. Follow standard Git workflows, ensuring all code commits are tied to documented Agile issues and epics. Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to troubleshoot system bottlenecks and implement scalable solutions. Write comprehensive unit and integration tests to ensure system reliability. Required Experience Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience). U.S Citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance Foundational software development experience (such as internships, academic projects, or self-directed portfolios). Proficiency in at least one primary programming language used for backend or web development (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript). Understanding of relational databases and SQL (PostgreSQL preferred). Familiarity with version control systems, specifically Git. Strong problem-solving skills and a collaborative mindset. Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with messaging brokers or event-driven architecture. Active security clearance Familiarity with Agile frameworks and collaborative development platforms (e.g., GitHub, GitLab, or similar tools).
