Critical Care/Trauma Physician Assistant

Position Number: 1.0 FTE (Full-Time Equivalent)

The Physician Assistant Intensivist provides advanced clinical care to critically ill patients in the intensive care unit during day shift hours. Working collaboratively with critical care physicians and the multidisciplinary ICU team, the PA manages complex medical conditions, performs procedures, and supports high-acuity patient care across the continuum of critical illness.

• Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including histories, physical examinations, and daily ICU rounds

• Manage critically ill patients under the supervision of an intensivist physician

• Develop, implement, and adjust treatment plans for ICU patients

• Order, interpret, and document diagnostic tests, imaging, and laboratory results

• Perform bedside procedures within scope of practice (e.g., central lines, arterial lines, intubation assistance, chest tubes)

• Manage ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring, and vasoactive medications

• Respond to clinical deterioration, emergencies, and rapid response events

• Coordinate care with nursing, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and consulting services

• Communicate effectively with patients and families regarding condition, treatment plans, and prognosis

• Ensure accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record

• Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and ICU protocols

• Day shift coverage

• May include weekends or holidays based on departmental needs

• No overnight shifts required unless otherwise specified

• Medical, surgical, and/or mixed ICU patients

• Conditions may include respiratory failure, sepsis, shock, multi-organ failure, and post-operative critical care

• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program

• Current national certification as a Physician Assistant

• Active or eligible state licensure

• BLS and ACLS certification required

• Prior ICU, critical care, emergency medicine, or hospital medicine experience preferred

• Strong critical thinking and clinical judgment

• Ability to function effectively in high-acuity, fast-paced environments

• Proficiency in ICU procedures and critical care management

• Excellent communication and teamwork skills

• Commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered care

• Intensive care unit setting

• Requires standing, walking, lifting, and manual dexterity

• Exposure to high-stress and emergent clinical situations
