TEACHER ASSISTANT

Categories: Special Education Assistant (2) To work with students with disabilities under the direction, supervision of certified personnel and to assist students in reaching their goals as indicated on their IEPs. Under Direction of Special Education Teacher Assist in implementing IEP goals. Carry out small group instruction and assist in one‑on‑one instruction as needed. Assist teachers and therapists in maintaining appropriate data and records. Support the continuous implementation of skills and goals associated with students’ OT, SLP and PT needs. Carry out and maintain computer skills and communication devices for students. Implement equipment, sensory, mobility, behavior plans and self‑care plans (toileting) per students’ needs – the physical ability to assist in lifting students for the purpose of positioning, changing, toileting, etc. when needed is essential. Additional Requirements When Needed: Assist students with self‑help skills (grooming, toileting etc.) Assist students with mobility needs (may involve lifting, toileting, etc.) Assist with lifting and positioning students Assist students in their environmental setting including the restroom Accompany students to physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech etc. Observe and chart behavior. Give positive reinforcement and support. Provide close supervision for students with self regulation needs. Assist in implementing the positive behavior support plan as set up by the supervising teacher according to the IEP. Ability and willingness to work with students who have special needs and/or self regulation needs (i.e. biting, kicking, hitting, emotional outburst, etc.) Assist with data keeping and recording. Recognize the stages of an escalating crisis and intervene with evidence‑based techniques to appropriately de‑escalate. Supervise safe spots. Position Type Full‑time Job Requirements and Qualifications Qualifications: have a high school diploma. Completion of a Teacher Assistant Pre‑Employment Training Program approved by the RI Department of Education (RIDE). Two (2) exceptions: a) Those with certification as a TA in another state, b) Those with an associate degree or bachelor’s degree and who have completed coursework or other training consistent with the teacher assistant program standards. Meet one of the following: a) successfully passed the ParaPro Assessment; b) complete at least 2 years of study at an institution of higher education; c) obtain an associate or higher degree. At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred. High school or trade school degree preferred. Citizenship, residency or work visa required. Preference given to candidates who articulate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
