The Consultant, Competitive Intelligence for Life and Long-Term Care is a sales-facing individual contributor role responsible for turning industry, competitor, and market information into clear, actionable insights for business partners. This role monitors carrier and product developments across the life and LTC marketplace, compiles and interprets industry data, and applies competitive knowledge to real business situations. This associate serves as a trusted resource for sales, product, and leadership teams by helping them understand competitor positioning, market shifts, and Nationwide’s relative strengths and opportunities. The role requires strong industry knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to translate complex information into practical recommendations, competitive case support, and compelling market stories for a range of audiences. Core Responsibilities Monitor life and long-term care competitor products, carriers, product changes, underwriting practices, pricing trends, distribution developments, and broader industry activity. Represent Nationwide to other carrier partners through broader industry organizations. Develop market trend reports and industry data summaries tailored to varied audiences, using the appropriate level of detail and format, including presentations, newsletters, and quick-turn business updates. Compile, organize, validate, and analyze competitive and industry data from internal and external sources to support business decisions. Develop clear points of view on Nationwide’s market position, including where we lead, where we are competitive, and where gaps or risks may exist. Support sales and distribution partners with timely, relevant, and practical competitive intelligence that can be used in the field. Prepare and deliver presentations to leadership on industry trends, competitor moves, emerging risks, and implications for Nationwide. Build and maintain competitive intelligence resources, competitor profiles, market summaries, and recurring reporting that improve access to actionable insights. Partner closely with product, sales, advanced consulting, strategy, and other internal stakeholders to align intelligence with business priorities. Respond to ad hoc requests with thoughtful analysis, clear recommendations, and an appropriate sense of urgency. Serve as a knowledgeable voice on the life and LTC competitive landscape and represent the function with credibility across business discussions. Example Outputs Examples include competitive case guidance for sales partners, leadership presentations on industry changes and competitor activity, competitor product summaries, market trend reporting, positioning insights, and talking points on key market developments. Location and Schedule This role requires a hybrid in-office schedule out of our Columbus, OH location (3 days per week). Job Details Job Level: G3 band Key Responsibilities Retrieves and manipulates data, ensuring data suitability and accuracy. Updates Competitive Intelligence and acts as subject matter authority for tools and reports; may update and validate complex coding in applications and/or vendor software. Conducts analyses by selecting appropriate data sources and methods, makes assumptions, recognizes considerations, and develops recommendations. Investigates hypotheses through additional research as needed. Works on special assignments, may lead competitive intelligence project teams, and collaborates on project plans, requirements, and timelines. Communicates effectively with internal and external partners, presents analytical findings, and trains users on tools and processes. Leverages business partner relationships to complete assignments and presents to corporate and executive audiences. Participates in peer reviews and may assist in training associates and partners outside the unit. Participates in ad hoc analyses; applies data mining techniques to discover new relationships and contributes to project planning. Evaluates and documents new techniques, methodologies, and software to support research; may act as a lead on selected projects. Participates in interdisciplinary teams as assigned. Completes testing of company and competitor rates available through competitive intelligence tools. May perform other responsibilities as assigned. Reporting Relationships: Reports to Manager/Director; this is an individual contributor role. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, computer science, business, finance, mathematics, statistics, economics, management information systems or related field with a strong quantitative orientation preferred. Licenses/Certifications: SAS certification a plus. Insurance licenses or designations such as CPCU, ARM, CLU, ChFC, FLMI, CFP, NASD, etc. also are a plus. Experience: Typically eight to ten years of related experience in a business unit (e.g., pricing, actuarial, product) or combined experience and educational equivalent. Programming and/or web development experience desired. Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Strong knowledge of mathematics, statistics and/or probability; proven analytical skills; understanding of products and terminology; ability to analyze competitive intelligence data; effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to use database software such as SAS or SQL.
