Traction Power Engineer

Job Description Traction Power Engineer at AECOM’s New England Transit Group. The role requires knowledge of third rail systems and load flow study experience. Primary responsibilities include preparing design drawings, documents, specifications, cost estimates, proposals, calculations, and studies associated with traction power systems for electrified railways AC and DC, and serving as a technical leader. Responsibilities Guide drafters, designers and less experienced engineers to prepare single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation physical layouts, emergency trip, grounding and lighting, substation equipment selection, specifications, proposal development, cost estimates, scheduling, test plans, field tests, reports, analysis and technical studies. Perform protective relay settings and coordination studies. Perform grounding design, load flow, harmonic, power flow, voltage drop, protective relay settings and coordination, and arc flash studies using specialized software. Recommend actions to ensure compliance with client, local, state, and federal regulations including AREMA, NFPA 70, IEEE C2, and other applicable US standards. Develop systemwide duct bank drawings in coordination with system disciplines and assist CAD for BIM clash detection. Provide value engineering on traction power systems. Perform technical reviews of other team members’ designs. Interface with other technical disciplines such as communications systems, overhead catenary/3rd rail, electrical, mechanical, structural, architectural, track, and civil. Work with Senior Traction Power Engineers. Design with constructability in mind throughout all steps. Minimum Requirements BA/BS plus 6 years of experience or equivalent education/experience. Professional Engineering License. Experience with traction power AC and DC high and low voltage systems including relaying, rectifier, distribution and SCADA equipment. Extensive experience in design calculations, plans development, specifications and technical report writing. Experience and knowledge of AREMA and IEEE standards for traction power design. Experience working on large transit/railroad projects with substations, 3rd rail and/or overhead contact distribution systems. Preferred Qualifications 15+ years of experience in electrical/traction power design and construction engineering projects. Experience with CTDOT, Metro-North, Amtrak and MBTA. Experience in design/build and other alternative delivery projects. Familiar with AutoCAD and OpenRoads/OpenRail. Experience writing technical papers and presentations. Experience with technical studies for traction power systems including train performance simulation, AC/DC load flow, short‑circuit calculations, and EMF/EMI studies. Leadership positions held on professional societies or technical committees. Experience in providing technical training. Experience writing project proposals and delivering oral presentations for business development. Experience with MBTA, CTDOT, Amtrak, and Metro North. Expected range: $150,000.00 – $200,000.00.
