Across the globe, each Guggenheim stands not just as a backdrop for visionary art but as masterpieces in and of themselves to experience. Summary of Position Working independently, under the guidance of the Co‑Interim Director, Editorial, the Editor serves as the primary editor of exhibition and collection catalogues and exhibition‑related material. In close collaboration with other members of the Publications department, as well as curators and/or guest authors, the Editor edits manuscripts, oversees the editorial development of layouts, manages editorial schedules, and is responsible for editing and/or overseeing the editing of all public‑facing printed and digital copy related to exhibitions, including but not limited to wall texts, object labels, communications and educational materials, and Collection Online texts. This position may assist other Editors with aspects of exhibition catalogues or wall texts and provide administrative support for some departmental business. Guggenheim Publications produces around three books per year and edits didactics for approximately seven exhibitions per year. Skill and Experience Requirements Minimum of 4 years of experience as an editor, preferably in an art‑related field. Must have a strong understanding of modern and contemporary art, with experience editing academic texts, including knowledge of long‑form editing style and scholarly citation practices, and an ability to emphasize structure and clarity of language. Firm grasp of the book production process. Experience in copyediting or copywriting interpretive materials, and/or marketing and communications materials. Excellent time‑management skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast‑paced environment. Must be able to work with writers of varying levels of publishing experience. Highly organized, with exceptional attention to detail. Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities. Ability to be proactive, exercise independent judgment, take initiative, and propose creative solutions. Ability to balance editing responsibilities with project management and administrative tasks. Self‑motivated and able to work both independently and collaboratively. Command of the Chicago Manual of Style and thorough knowledge of other style/usage materials. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat are required. Proficiency with InDesign is desired. Familiarity with The Museum System (TMS) is a plus. Knowledge of multiple languages is a plus. Must be able to pass an editing test. Key Responsibilities Fully edit exhibition and collection catalogues, working closely with the Co‑Interim Director, Editorial; curators; guest authors; external graphic designers; the production manager; and the rights and reproductions manager. Responsibilities often include editing front matter, scholarly essays, artists’ writings, artwork entries, bibliographies, chronologies, and exhibition histories. Assist other Editors as needed on book projects, including but not limited to: research and edit bibliographies; fact‑checking; edit front and back matter, captions, and citations; proofread and slug layouts; compile copyright credits; copyedit against style sheets; and manage source scans from authors. Serve as editor and project manager for exhibition didactics: edit manuscripts with curators, and manage projects through production in accordance with schedules and in collaboration with Graphic Design. Edit, copyedit, and proofread public‑facing printed and digital content for the museum at large, including items for Education, Membership, Marketing, Press, Development, Visitor Services, etc., in consultation with staff across departments. Manage editorial schedules for assigned projects, in coordination with the Co‑Interim Director, Editorial; production staff; internal and external graphic designers; and other stakeholders. With the Co‑Interim Director, Editorial, determine project needs, including hiring and overseeing translators, proofreaders, etc., and delegating tasks to the Associate Editor. Implement the General Museum and Exhibition Catalogue Style Guides, and create and apply project‑specific style guides in collaboration with the curatorial team. Generate sales copy for the book distributor and copublishing partners, and draft jacket or cover copy as needed. Work Demands and Environment Ability to travel within the metropolitan area as required to perform the above duties at any of the Guggenheim's owned or leased properties upon request. Must be able to sit for extended periods of time. Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays on occasion. Ability to lift at least 10–15 lbs. Education Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.
