Posting Title Undergraduate Intern – Mechanical Engineering/Automation and Controls Location CO - Golden Position Type Intern (Fixed Term) Hours Per Week 20 Job Description NRL is seeking a part‑time undergraduate intern to support the High Flux Solar Furnace (HFSF) operations. The intern will assist with daily laboratory operations, experimental testing setups, and modernizing and automating facility hardware. Key Responsibilities Assist with extreme environment testing of experimental hardware, setting up and executing thermal tests. Support transition of manual laboratory setups to automated operations, including implementation and testing of closed‑loop PID temperature control systems. Help configure, calibrate, and troubleshoot DAQ instrumentation using LabVIEW and National Instruments hardware to monitor furnace sensors. Use SolidWorks to draft and model custom mounting brackets, sensor fixtures, and structural components. Assist with script writing and development of basic web‑based monitoring tools using Python, Django, and React to display real‑time data from HFSF instrumentation. Basic Qualifications Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Undergraduate: Must be enrolled full‑time in a bachelor’s degree program from an accredited institution. Post‑Undergraduate: Must have earned a bachelor’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for up to one year of internship. Graduate: Must be enrolled full‑time in a master’s degree program from an accredited institution. Post‑Graduate: Must have earned a master’s degree within the past 12 months. Eligible for up to one year of internship. Enrolled (or recently completed) as an undergraduate pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field. Experience with SolidWorks. Hands‑on experience with LabVIEW and National Instruments DAQ hardware. Experience with basic scripting in Python. Preferred Qualifications Certified SolidWorks Professional (CSWP) designation. Experience designing and building closed‑loop PID temperature control systems using LabVIEW and NI DAQ. Experience developing data acquisition (DAQ) systems. Background in hardware testing for extreme environments. Familiarity with full‑stack software development frameworks (Python, Django, etc.) for system monitoring or data visualization.
