Description

We are seeking a dynamic, compassionate, and collaborative Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide clinical and executive leadership across a growing network of healthcare service sites in the Antelope Valley and East Kern County region of California .

This is a unique opportunity for an experienced physician leader to combine direct primary care with executive-level clinical leadership , helping shape the delivery of high-quality healthcare and improve access for thousands of underserved individuals and families.

The CMO will spend approximately 60% of their time providing direct patient care and 40% in administrative and medical leadership responsibilities . The successful candidate will work closely with the CEO and Executive Leadership Team to advance clinical quality, provider performance, organizational strategy, compliance, staffing, and operations.

The CMO will help lead clinical services across multiple sites while collaborating with providers, operational leaders, community partners, and the organization's governing board.

The organization operates within a highly regulated healthcare environment and maintains a focus on compliance with HRSA, The Joint Commission (TJC), Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH), and other applicable regulatory standards .

Compensation:

• Annual Salary: $320,000 – $420,000, depending on experience and qualifications (DOE)

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Patient Care

• Provide direct primary care services approximately 60% of the time , generally working at one of the organization's clinic sites.
• Provide clinical care on a Monday–Friday schedule .
• Evaluate, diagnose, treat, and manage patients in a primary care setting.
• Maintain high standards of patient-centered, compassionate, and evidence-based care.
• Promote improved access to quality healthcare for underserved populations.

Provider Leadership & Supervision

• Oversee and supervise all licensed medical providers, including:
  • MDs
  • DOs
  • Nurse Practitioners (NPs)
  • Physician Assistants (PAs)
• Lead monthly provider meetings .
• Conduct provider performance reviews.
• Provide provider productivity coaching and support.
• Establish and maintain expectations for clinical performance, quality, documentation, and productivity.
• Support professional development and effective provider performance.

Quality Improvement & Population Health

• Develop, implement, and monitor Quality Improvement (QI) strategies .
• Monitor and improve HEDIS metric performance .
• Promote continuous improvement in clinical quality and patient outcomes.
• Support population health initiatives and effective delivery of care to underserved populations.
• Identify opportunities to improve clinical processes and organizational performance.

Documentation, Coding & Compliance

• Champion accurate and timely clinical documentation.
• Promote appropriate medical coding and note closure .
• Ensure documentation supports billing, compliance, quality reporting, and continuity of care.
• Ensure clinical operations comply with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements, including:
  • HRSA
  • The Joint Commission (TJC)
  • Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH)
  • Other applicable regulatory bodies and healthcare standards.

Executive Leadership & Organizational Strategy

• Serve as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team .
• Collaborate with executive leadership on:
  • Organizational goals
  • Clinical strategy
  • Staffing
  • Operations
  • Provider performance
  • Quality initiatives
  • Healthcare delivery
• Partner with the CEO on strategic and operational priorities.
• Represent the organization at Board meetings and with community partners, as approved by the CEO.
• Help shape the organization's clinical direction as it continues to grow.

Qualifications

Required

• MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
• Board certification in a primary care specialty , such as:
  • Family Medicine
  • Internal Medicine
  • Pediatrics
  • Other applicable primary care specialty
• Active California medical license , or eligibility for immediate licensure.
• Minimum 5 years of clinical practice experience .
• Minimum 3 years of medical leadership experience .
• Strong interpersonal, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to health equity and caring for underserved communities .

Preferred

• Previous FQHC or community health center experience .
• Experience with HRSA requirements and community health operations.
• Experience with quality improvement and HEDIS performance .
• Experience supervising multidisciplinary medical provider teams.
• Experience with clinical documentation, coding, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
• Experience participating in executive leadership and organizational strategy.

Working Hours

• Full-Time
• Monday–Friday schedule.
• Approximately 3 days per week (60%) dedicated to direct clinical care.
• Approximately 2 days per week (40%) dedicated to administrative, executive, and medical leadership responsibilities.
• Clinical responsibilities will be performed at one of the organization's clinic sites.
• The role requires flexibility to participate in leadership meetings, provider meetings, performance reviews, Board activities, and community engagements as needed.
