Field Service Technician IV

Okuma America Corporation is seeking a skilled Field Service Technician IV to provide expert technical support, machine installations, and repair services for our customers across North America. In this role, you will diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, electrical, software, and automation‑related issues on Okuma CNC machine tools and related equipment. Key Responsibilities Travel to customer locations to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain Okuma machine tools and automation systems. Perform installations and commissioning of new machine models and advanced manufacturing equipment. Install retrofit packages and implement machine upgrades or design improvements. Diagnose and resolve issues involving mechanical systems, machine alignment, controls, hardware, software, peripherals, and automation technologies. Provide technical support to customers and distributors via phone, email, and remote troubleshooting tools. Document service activities and communicate findings through detailed service reports and technical documentation. Develop and maintain technical bulletins, repair procedures, and how-to guides that strengthen distributor service capabilities. Collaborate with distributors, customers, and internal service teams to ensure timely issue resolution and a positive customer experience. Maintain compliance with all company policies, safety standards, and best practices. Continuously identify opportunities to improve processes, enhance service delivery, and add value to customers. What We're Looking For Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills. Experience working with CNC machine tools, manufacturing equipment, automation systems, or related industrial machinery. Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hardware, software, and control systems. Ability to work independently in a customer-facing field service environment. Excellent communication and technical documentation skills. Willingness and ability to travel extensively to support customer needs. Qualifications, Experience, Training, Education Associates Degree in Electronics or equivalent experience. Minimum of 5 years of experience in CNC controls, servo systems, PLCs, automation, and fundamental mechanical background including precision measurement, machine tool theory, hydraulics, and pneumatics. 5 years of prior machine tool experience (Okuma preferred). FANUC CNC experience (preferred). Okuma–Howa product knowledge (preferred). Prior technical writing experience (preferred). Technical Proficient in the use of precision measuring/diagnostic equipment, including laser, ball bar, micrometers, calipers, precision levels, precision indicators, and dynamometers. Advanced assembly drawing interpretation. Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills. Basic mechanical and electrical skills. Ability to read blueprints and electrical schematics. Basic use of hand tools and variety of electrical and mechanical devices such as precision measuring equipment, multimeters, oscilloscope, cranes, forklifts. Use of basic PC tools such as Outlook, Word, and Excel. Strong troubleshooting skills. Communication Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including exceptional listening skills. Exceptional ability to speak and write effectively in a business environment. Exceptional ability to ask necessary questions. Physical and Environmental Elements Physical Demands Ability to sit continuously for one‑quarter of the normal work shift and stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms for at least three‑quarters of the normal work shift. Ability to lift and carry, push, or pull up to 70 pounds. Ability to stoop, crouch, and reach. Ability to talk or hear continuously. Ability to see clearly to do all work‑related tasks (clear or corrected vision at 20 inches or less). Finger dexterity is required frequently for more than three‑quarters of the normal work shift, including operating a phone, computer, electronic equipment, electronic tools, pallet jack, and forklift. Work Environment Approximately half of the position’s functions are performed in the office environment with standard equipment and moderate noise levels. The other half of the position’s functions are performed at a customer site or in the Okuma warehouse/ showroom, with exposure to temperature variations, outdoor conditions, and noise levels. A small portion of the position’s functions may also be performed in the office environment. Special Requirements Maintain annual OSHA safety certifications as required by job duties.
