Ambulatory Oncology Nursing Responsibilities

Ambulatory oncology nurses provide direct clinical care to patients across the outpatient cancer care continuum, supporting assessment, education, symptom management, and coordination of care in clinic-based settings. Their work emphasizes longitudinal patient relationships, proactive management of treatment-related symptoms, and timely escalation of concerns to prevent unnecessary acute care utilization. As complexity increases, ambulatory oncology nurses coordinate care for patients with high-risk regimens, multiple co-morbidities, or frequent complications, often across multiple settings and transitions. Advanced practice within this subfamily reflects expanded clinical judgment, autonomy, and leadership in managing complex outpatient oncology populations while maintaining a bedside nursing focus.

N1: Performs routine patient care assignments and may require intermediate support. Applies theoretical knowledge to clinical practice in structured, low-risk environments. Demonstrates understanding of basic nursing principles and unit protocols. Begins applying foundational knowledge in real-time care. Uses standard procedures and tools to assess and respond to patient conditions. Escalates concerns to senior staff and the medical team. Works under varied levels of supervision depending on skillset. Follows care plans and protocols with limited decision-making. Communicates respectfully with patients and team members. Seeks clarification and feedback to support learning.

Essential Functions

• Performs routine assessments for ambulatory oncology patients; identifies changes in condition and escalates concerns per protocol.
• Provides direct care for patients in low-risk or survivorship settings following established treatment plans.
• Supports patients receiving standard therapies under supervision and assists with care coordination tasks.
• Administers medications and supportive treatments per protocol; follows oncology safety standards.
• Recognizes common treatment-related side effects and reports abnormalities.
• Participates in care for patients enrolled in clinical trials with guidance; follows protocol-specific workflows.
• Provides basic patient and family education on treatment plans, symptom expectations, and follow-up care.
• Coordinates care activities within the clinic, including communication with providers and team members.
• Maintains accurate and timely documentation in accordance with oncology and regulatory standards.
• Maintains a safe environment by adhering to chemotherapy handling, PPE, and double-check processes.
• Participates in clinic huddles, handoffs, and communication to support care coordination.
• At the discretion of department operational and patient care needs, this position is required to work rotating schedules, which may include variable hours, weekends, nights, and holidays to meet the staffing and patient care demands of a 24/7 complex health system. Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance during assigned shifts is considered an essential function of the role.

Licenses Required

• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.
• Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners and behavioral health patients.
