Emergency Department Crisis Screener

The Psychiatric ED Screener is a mental health worker whose primary function is to triage, assess, and provide disposition for patients arriving in the emergency department seeking mental health crisis intervention voluntarily or via legal means. The Psychiatric ED Screener works closely with the emergency department medical staff, external agencies, psychiatry residents, attending psychiatrists, additional staff members, security, and local law enforcement personnel. They function as an integral member of this interdisciplinary team. They provide emergency suicide risk assessments to potentially volatile patients. The Psychiatric ED Screener collects pertinent collateral information from families and other support networks through in-person or telephone interviews and appropriate review of medical records. The Psychiatric ED Screener utilizes the DSM-5 to appropriately diagnose mental illnesses. They develop effective psychosocial formulations and consult with the emergency department attending physician to determine the safest possible disposition for the patient. Coordination with the attending physician to formulate a disposition plan and document it in the medical record is essential. If a patient requires admission to an inpatient psychiatric unit, the screener coordinates and reviews the case with the on-call psychiatrist or resident. They assist the inpatient unit with insurance authorizations as requested and support the completion of safety plans for patients at high risk for suicide. Additionally, floating to assist inpatient units during low or no volume in the psychiatric emergency department is expected.

Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience administering crisis assessments in a Behavioral Health or similar setting. License: Massachusetts Temporary Nursing Service Agency License (Nursing Pool) Certifications: BLS (AHA) CPI Must-Have: Master's degree in Social Work Experience with pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients Supervisory references from the last 2 years of employment
