Experience Essential: Credentials Essential: The UNM Hospitals Pharmacy Technician Trainee Program is a 12-week, full-time training opportunity designed to develop skilled Pharmacy Technicians while preparing trainees for the PTCB certification exam. Trainees work 40 hours per week, with approximately 20 hours of hands‑on experiential training and 20 hours of paid didactic study time, supported by a structured curriculum, peer cohort, program sponsor, and regular feedback. This program provides a supportive pathway to pharmacy technician certification while meeting NewMexico Board of Pharmacy requirements. Receive 17% Weekday Nights, 26% Weekend Nights and 15% Weekend Day shift differentials. Department: Pharmacy - Inpatient - UH FTE: 1.00 Full Time Shift: Rotating Position Summary Complete the UNM Hospitals 12‑week pharmacy technician training program and obtain Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) within one year of hire. This role is hybrid learning and didactic. The initial 12‑week training program will consist of 20 hours per week staffing as a pharmacy tech and 20 hours per week didactic learning in preparation for the PTCB exam. Perform a variety of pharmacy technician duties under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. Inpatient to include tasks such as answering the pharmacy phones, triaging medication requests, delivering replenishments including controlled substances and patient specific medications. Outpatient to include tasks such as answering the pharmacy phone line, learning and becoming efficient with the pharmacy management system by entering patient information, allergies, prescription information to include filling routine prescriptions orders, prepackaging pharmaceuticals and other related duties. Pharmacy technician shall understand medical and pharmaceutical terminology, symbols, and abbreviations used in the practice of pharmacy. Ensure adherence to Hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups. Detailed Responsibilities DATA - Enter various data into computer and forms, verify data, make corrections and ensure accuracy INVENTORY – Order medications from wholesaler and put order on pharmacy shelf when received. Load medication into distribution/dispensing technological solutions MEETINGS - Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations PATIENT ASSIST PROG - Maintain and monitor patient assistance program to include procuring medication for UNM Hospitals indigent patients PATIENT ASSIST PROG - Research qualifications, drug availability for IDP; assist patients with form completion; submit requests to drug manufactures for patient assistance programs PHARMACY PRACTICE – Assist in various technical activities associated with the preparation and distribution of medications such as filling routine prescription orders, prepackaging pharmaceuticals and other related duties PHARMACY PRACTICE – Have basic understanding of pharmacology and basic knowledge of appropriate pharmacy references PHARMACY PRACTICE – Know trade and generic names for medications frequently dispensed by the pharmacy PHARMACY PRACTICE – Understand pharmaceutical calculations necessary for the preparation and dispensing of drug products manufacturing, preparation, packaging, labeling and proper storage of drug products dosage forms and routes of administration POLICY & PROCEDURE - Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures and/or guidelines within assigned area RECORDS - Maintain logs to include narcotic inventory and other controlled substance records; maintain records on prescriptions dispensed REPORTS - May assist with preparation and maintenance of a variety of reports; analyze and interpret reports as required INPT – Learn and become efficient with automated pharmacy systems (i.e.) DoseEdge, Logistics, Pharmacy Keeper, Cerner, and BD Pyxis Enterprise/Med station INPT – Perform unit and/or in‑ house inspections and medication safety audits INPT – Process refills with correct drug, dose, and dosage form. Review pharmacy label before placing on medication for pharmacist approval for new orders or when stock outs occur, delivery of patient specific medications to include intravenous medications OUTPT CASHIER - Perform basic cashiering duties; collect money for prescription and related purchases; close and balance register OUTPT – Fill medication with correct drug, dose, and dosage form. Review pharmacy label before placing on medication for pharmacist approval OUTPT – Learn and become efficient with the pharmacy management system to enter patient information, allergies, medical conditions, and patient insurance plans OUTPT – Type prescription information to include drug name, dosage, and directions on how to take medication OUTPT – Adjudicate claims to patient’s insurance plan/s, manufacturer coupons, and patient assistance programs OUTPT – Monitor paid claims and troubleshoot all rejected claims to ensure proper plan reimbursement is received and the appropriate copay is presented to the patient OUTPT – Weigh, measure and mix ingredients; compound and prepare medication, emulsions, suspensions, liquids, powders and ointments by using graduates, balance, mortar, pestle and funnels OUTPT - Obtain and document prior authorization from patient health plan before medication administration OUTPT – Send message to provider to request a new prescription for patient OUTPT - Receive patient prescription refill requests; fax or call in completed prescription refills; document prescription refill requests for provider approval OUTPT – Assist with planning and coordinating of special projects, events and the area quality improvement program; provide and coordinate staff training OUTPT – Perform return to stock for prescription not picked up within 7 days. PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may “not seem right” Qualifications Experience Essential: Nonessential No minimum experience required Experience in a clinical or hospital setting Bilingual English/Spanish Bilingual English/Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo Credentials Essential: Certified Pharmacy Tech or within 1 year PTCB exam after 12 wks of hire & must obtain PTCB w/in 1 yr Essential Credential equivalent experience: Failure to pass the PTCB exam within 12 months or failure of the PTCB examination twice will result in termination of employment Physical Conditions Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people.
