Our adoptions, shelter, clinic, and animal services officer teams learn first-hand about proper care of homeless and stray animals and work hard to help find them new homes.We Require:One year of experience in the care and treatment of animals at a veterinary clinic, animal hospital, or with a public or private agencyHigh School Diploma or GEDOther Requirements:Candidates must be flexible and able to work all shifts, including starting as early as 5 am and finishing as late as 7 pm, working weekends and holidays. Employees can be assigned to any shift, with any combination of days off, determined by the Department's needsMust be willing and able to participate on the euthanasia team as requiredWe Also Value:Experience as a veterinary technician at a high-volume spay/neuter clinic or animal shelterCompletion of a certified curriculum in veterinary technician/assistingJob Contributions:Participate in high-volume/high-quality surgery at MCACC by restraining animals for pre-operative exams, inducing animals, preparing animals for surgery, monitoring anesthesia, monitoring recovery, and maintaining surgical cleanliness in the surgical suiteProvide prescribed medication and perform treatments on shelter animalsAdminister vaccinations and implant microchips into animalClean, disinfect, and maintain the clinic and job-related equipment according to established disease control protocolsComplete data entries and maintain detailed and accurate animal health recordsSurvey the shelter population to identify animals in need of medical attention, grooming, or sterilizationAssist staff veterinarians with various procedures, including euthanasia and emergency situationsEducate adopters on appropriate medical care, including post-operative instructions and annual vaccinationsDeliver quality customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs, and eventsPerform routine clinical laboratory tests, including fecal flotations, skin scrapes, and urine cytologyInvolved in and will perform humane euthanasia of animals when required, in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, and established protocolsWorking Conditions:Work is predominantly performed in an animal shelter with exposure to extreme and variable temperatures, dogs and cats with unknown temperaments and behaviors, excessive noise, animal waste and fluids, deceased animals, cleaning chemicals, and Zoonotic DiseasesWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk on all types of surfaces, sometimes slippery and/or uneven and rough, and perform duties that require lifting, bending, and stoopingMay be assigned to work at other shelter locations based on operational needs. Work involves regular participation in animal care and control activities, including the humane euthanasia of animals, handling injured, ill, or aggressive animals, interacting with members of the public, and performing time-sensitive duties under varying stressful, high-pressure conditions.
