The Emergency Vehicle Technician Supervisor is part of this team dedicated to providing service solutions that exceed our customers’ expectations. With a specialized fleet of emergency response vehicles, the Tucson Fire Department provides the latest technologies, training, and industry certification opportunities to keep the fleet management team and the fleet at the forefront of the industry.

The Emergency Vehicle Technician Supervisor plans, coordinates and supervises the daily activities and work assignments of the technicians and staff involved in the repair and maintenance of the Fire Department’s apparatus, ambulances and support equipment. Workflow is based on Tucson Fire Department policies, manufacturer requirements, and applicable NFPA standards.

Skill Based Pay/Certifications and expected timeline:

The Emergency Vehicle Technician Supervisor classification is included in a skill-based pay plan which provides compensation for achieving and maintaining 30 ASE and EVT certifications required for this position as listed below. ASE and EVT certification fees are paid for by the department with a passing score. Employees in this classification are required to progress through the levels of certification in a consecutive manner as listed below.

Entrance into the classification requires achievement of the following certifications within the first year of employment:

Tier 1 ASE Certifications:
• ASE A5 Brakes
• ASE T4 Brakes
• ASE T5 Suspension & Steering
• ASE T6 Electrical/Electronic Systems

Tier 1 EVT Certifications:
• EVT F1 Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus
• EVT F5 Aerial Fire Apparatus
• EVT E0 Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Ambulances
• EVT M1 Management Level 1 Supervisor

Achievement of the following certifications is required upon completion of the second year of employment:

Tier 2 ASE Certifications:
• ASE T2 Diesel Engines
• ASE T8 Preventive Maintenance
• ASE A4 Suspension and Steering
• ASE A9 Light Vehicle Diesel Engines

Tier 2 EVT Certifications:
• EVT F3 Fire Pumps & Accessories
• EVT F6 Allison Automatic Transmissions
• EVT M2 Management Level 2 Supervisor

Achievement of the following certifications is required upon completion of the third year of employment

Tier 3 ASE Certifications
• ASE T1 Gasoline Engines
• ASE T7 Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning
• ASE A6 Electrical/Electronic Systems

Tier 3 EVT Certifications
• EVT F4 Fire Apparatus Electrical Systems
• EVT E3 Ambulance Heating, Air Conditioning & Ventilation

Achievement of the following certifications is required upon completion of the fourth year of employment:

ABOUT THIS JOB

Position Specific Summary

The Emergency Vehicle Technician Supervisor at the City of Tucson’s Fire Department supervises personnel in the maintenance, repair, and modification of emergency response vehicles and their components in a busy and fluid environment.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Emergency Vehicle Fleet Superintendent. This position exercises supervision over division personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Supervises, schedules, and evaluates repair and maintenance tasks for multiple employees on an assigned shift. Sets priorities, monitors workflow, conducts quality inspections, and assesses equipment performance.
• Coordinates statutory inspections, facilitates safety meetings, and oversees safety-related activities. Leads daily meetings to review workflows. Provides safety training and instruction on new vehicle technologies for efficient and safe maintenance and repairs. Manages weekly on-call schedules to ensure after-hours vehicle availability.
• Prepares preventive maintenance and fleet status reports using various programs. Manages work orders, including opening, closing, and assigning tasks based on customer requests.
• Ensures work area cleanliness, addresses safety concerns, and manages vehicle recalls. Schedules and assigns preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs for vehicles and equipment.
• Reviews results from emissions tests, oil analysis, ladder inspections, and pump tests. Coordinates with vendors on estimates and outsourced maintenance, repairs, and rebuilds.
• Supports recruitment and hiring processes, recommends disciplinary and corrective actions, and fosters positive department morale through leadership and guidance. Conducts employee performance evaluations. Collaborates with the Superintendent and City HR to address personnel issues.
• Manages employee timekeeping by approving timecards, leave requests, and schedules. Ensures compliance by approving certifications and tracking skill-based tiers.
• Performs all other duties and tasks as assigned

Working Conditions:

Indoor and outdoor work with some exposure to physical, ergonomic, or emotional hazardous environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

., Minimum Qualifications
6 months post high school and 4 years of directly related experience
Experience: 4 years of recent, relevant experience in supervision, management, or in a lead position in related field(s)
Valid and Unrestricted Class D operators license
Ability to lift equipment and materials up to 75lbs
Completion of the City of Tucson Supervisor Training Program after hire
Section 609 Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery and Recycling certification within 30 days of hire
Ability to work in a fast paced environment
Ability to work shift work if needed
Ability to work weekends, holidays, and after-hours as needed


Preferred Qualifications
Technical School diploma/certificate or associate’s degree
