The Statistician is responsible for conducting advanced statistical analyses, developing reproducible analytic workflows, and generating highquality data products that inform research, evaluation, and policy decisions across the Administration. This position ensures timely analysis and interpretation of complex datasets to support evidenceinformed decisionmaking and enhance understanding of population health trends. The Statistician applies rigorous quantitative methods to produce actionable insights that guide program evaluation and strategic planning. Working under the general supervision of the Program Manager for the Research and Evaluation Program, the Statistician collaborates with internal divisions and external partners to support research activities, fulfill data requests, and strengthen analytic capacity across the Administration. They contribute to evaluation activities, develop dashboards and selfservice analytic tools, and ensure adherence to methodological and documentation standards. The role requires strong technical expertise in biostatistics and public health analytics, a commitment to data quality and reproducibility, and the ability to translate complex results into clear, accessible findings for diverse audiences.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Serves as a subject matter expert in statistical methodologies and data processing, advising on best practices for statistical work processes across the organization. Conceives, plans, and leads studies evaluating the effectiveness of health and social programs, leveraging quantitative analysis to support program improvements. Identifies and solve complex statistical problems, determining the most feasible
approaches for resolution. Provides expert consultation to agency personnel on biostatistical and epidemiological methods, ensuring proper data evaluation and interpretation.
Determines nature of statistical problems needing investigation and determines most feasible approach to the solution of such problems. Utilizes professional expertise in the field of automatic data processing and the application of various software packages to ensure data quality and integrity, to perform electronic file transfers and electronic file linkages. Performs routine analysis of data and other programs' data for their annual/quarterly/monthly reports and assist in the preparation of such reports. Recommend content, format, dissemination methods, etc. Develops statistical standards for reports and publications. Evaluate statistical methods used in reports. Monitor dissemination of these reports. Establishes and maintain data analysis group to utilize data collected to include other agencies, statisticians, and PRAMS/BRFSS coordinators. The group may include staff from other areas of the agency interested in collaborating and/or utilizing the group's statistical expertise. Coordinates the application of biostatistical and epidemiological principles in various health-related program designs and evaluations.
Utilizes professional expertise in the field of automatic data processing and the application of various software packages, such as Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and SAS, to ensure data quality and integrity and to perform electronic file transfers; listing and tabulation of data for preparation of statistical reports; analysis and evaluation of population health and social goals and objectives; and electronic file linkages.
Qualifications and Education:
Degree: that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing or Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.
