Location: Haskell, TX Reports To: Survey Manager Employment Type: Full-Time
Position Summary
The Surveyor is responsible for providing accurate field surveying, layout, and quality-control support for structural steel erection. This position establishes and verifies building control lines, column and anchor rod locations, elevations, alignment, plumbness, and as-built conditions. The Surveyor works closely with the Superintendent and project team to support accurate steel installation, resolve field issues, and maintain project schedules and quality standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Operate surveying equipment to accurately collect, verify, and document field data.
- Establish and verify building control lines, column locations, anchor rod locations, and elevations.
- Provide layout and alignment support for structural steel installation, including center points, bolts, and anchor rods.
- Perform anchor rod location, projection, and plumbness surveys.
- Conduct quality-control surveys to verify building plumbness, alignment, and squareness.
- Prepare and provide as-built drawings and survey documentation as required.
- Assist with the layout and installation of miscellaneous steel, including monumental stairs, shaft steel, and other structural components.
- Assist with overhead crane girder installation and perform surveys of installed girders.
- Coordinate surveying activities with the Superintendent to support the construction schedule.
- Work with project teams to identify and troubleshoot layout, alignment, and installation issues.
- Coordinate with other trades when their work may affect structural steel placement and accuracy.
- Communicate survey findings and field conditions clearly with project and field teams.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of experience in structural steel erection preferred.
- AutoCAD experience required.
- Working knowledge of AISC requirements for building orientation, alignment, and structural steel installation.
- Experience using data collectors, electronic or robotic total stations,
- Proficient with Trimble and Leica robotic total stations (setup, backsighting, and control verification)
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, structural and shop drawings, specifications, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Strong understanding of surveying principles, construction layout, elevations, alignment, and building geometry.
- Ability to work safely at heights, including from aerial lifts and elevated steel floors.
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification required
- Proficient with computers and survey-related software.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with Superintendents, project teams, and field personnel.
Work Environment
- Active commercial and industrial construction job sites.
- Exposure to heights, outdoor weather conditions, heavy machinery, and physically demanding work environments.
- Travel to multiple project locations may be required.
- Overtime and weekend work may be necessary based on project schedules.
