At this time, we have 1 opening for a 5-hour 10-month employee in the Child Care Department Monday through Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The eligibility list will be used to fill current substitute and future permanent openings and will be certified for six months. Please review experience and education requirements before applying. BASIC FUNCTION Under the direction and supervision of the Preschool Site Supervisor, the Preschool Teacher provides a safe, nurturing environment and engaging activities to support preschool-aged children’s developmental and social-emotional needs. The Preschool Teacher provides education, care, and supervision in classrooms and playgrounds. This position employs a range of instructional techniques and strategies to enhance student progress by establishing and maintaining a productive classroom environment. The Preschool Teacher assists in the development and implementation of the program curriculum. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Utilize a variety of teaching methodologies and strategies and activities such as singing, dance, rhythm, and arts and crafts to instruct a wide range of students based on their developmental, physical, and emotional maturity Prepare appropriate educational development plans for students Utilize informal and formal assessments and exercises to evaluate student skill levels Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment by performing housekeeping tasks, checking equipment and grounds for safety, and reporting any concerns or faulty equipment that do not meet safety standards Plan and implement a variety of physical activities to develop student gross and fine motor skills Provide routine first aid, contact Preschool Site Supervisor, families, police, fire, and emergency medical services as required Guide children with self-care, hygiene, and toileting needs, which includes diapering children May assist, prepare, and distribute snacks or meals May administer pre-authorized medication under specific guidelines and direction Complete and maintain a variety of records and files, including confidential student records and medical information Plan, design, and provide meaningful learning and developmental activities for preschool classes, including a program of instruction designed to enhance developmental, emotional, and physical capabilities of students Preschool Teacher Plan, coordinate, and maintain a supportive learning environment independently by working collaboratively with co-workers to develop lessons and learning activities Deliver education by using effective oral communication skills and provide students with clearly communicated instructions Create a positive, supportive, and inclusive preschool classroom that promotes teamwork and collaboration among staff, students, and families Participate in professional development opportunities offered by department, school site, and District that are held during employee’s work hours and work year May participate in professional development opportunities outside employee’s work hours and work year Perform related duties as assigned JOB REQUIREMENTS – QUALIFICATIONS Skill, Knowledge, and/or Ability Required: Skill to: Effectively receive and deliver communication in oral and written formats Maintain appropriate records and prepare complete and concise reports Operate basic computer, program software, and other electronic devices Knowledge of: Goals, principles, and practices for implementing age-appropriate child development and guidance in a preschool environment Play-based learning to assist children with individual and group activities Child mobility, cognition, and learning styles Mathematic, grammar, spelling, language, and reading to direct students with learning exercises or projects Communication methods that promote patience and sensitivity when interacting with students, staff, and families Equity, access, and inclusion practices as it relates to all program participants Ability to: Plan and implement an effective and efficient preschool instructional program Provide effective learning activities for children experiencing a wide range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and exhibiting varying levels of intellectual, social, and emotional maturity Effectively assess educational needs of children and implement appropriate and sound instructional plans and activities Provide a warm, attractive, and inviting learning environment Perform routine classroom-related clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office-related machines, equipment, and technology Work courteously and tactfully with co-workers, students, and families Adapt easily to work assignments, additional priorities, and new procedures Receive constructive feedback and modify work and behaviors appropriately Prioritize and identify needs and solve problems independently as appropriate Preschool Teacher Suggest improvements to Preschool Site Supervisor as appropriate Skillfully handle difficult situations using good judgment and tact Maintain a high level of professionalism and promote an environment of belonging Establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships Receive constructive criticism and modify work appropriately Demonstrate cultural competence and responsiveness in interactions, decision-making, communication, and processes Efficiently use and manage time and meet deadlines EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENT Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be: Experience Oneyearofpaid or volunteerexperienceina licensed children’s center, preschool-aged enrichment program, or comparable child care program Education Equivalent to the completion of High School and 12-semester units (or equivalent quarter units) in early childhood education or child development, including at least one three-semester unit (or four-quarter unit) course in each of the following core areas: Child growth and development or human growth and development Child, family, and community or child and family Program/curriculum LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENT Possession of a current American Red Cross First Aid Certificate Possession of a current Community C.P.R. Certificate PHYSICAL DEMANDS Persons performing service in this position classification will be expected to perform medium work, which involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work. (Per the Code of Federal Regulations – Section 404.1567 “Physical Exertion Requirements”). Engage in moderate physical activity, working in both indoor and outdoor environments throughout day Stand and walk for extended periods (greater than one hour) while supervising children and facilitating physical activities, including running/jogging, to ensure safety during play Bend down, squat, step, and/or kneel frequentlySit on floor and participate in classroom activities Ability to grasp, reach, push, and pull classroom and outdoor equipment, aids, and supplies Lift and carry program supplies and materials by bending, lifting, and transporting items Demonstrate sufficient arm, hand, and finger dexterity to operate tools, laptop/desktop computer, multimedia tools, and other program/office equipment Actively participate in playful playground activities with children Utilize sufficient hearing and speaking abilities to professionally project voice and communicate effectively with staff and students in both group and one-on-one settings Maintain visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens, observe and monitor children and environment for safety Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job. BENEFITS Permanent employees will receive paid holidays, sick leave, vacation and longevity benefits per contract or Commission Rules. The District offers a comprehensive package of insurance benefits. Employees working less than full-time, but a minimum of four hours will contribute an amount proportionate to the number of assigned work hours for major medical insurance benefits. The District does not offer a package of insurance benefits to employees working less than four hours per day. The District provides life insurance for employees who work a minimum of 3 hours. In addition, the District offers a retirement plan which uses joint employee and employer contributions. FINGERPRINTING Employees will be charged for processing their fingerprints at the time they are hired. The fingerprints are used to complete a confidential background investigation. All candidates with a record of convictions must indicate such on the confidential data form, which is attached to the job application. A record of conviction will not automatically disqualify an applicant from employment, but failure to list all convictions may result in disqualification or dismissal. PHYSICAL EXAMINATION Newly hired employees must pass a qualifying Medical examination given by a District-appointed physician, which includes testing for illegal controlled substances. TUBERCULOSIS EXAM Newly hired employees must submit a Mantoux Skin screening and certificate of completion within the past 60 days that indicates freedom from active tuberculosis.
