Lieutenant

Exercises required supervision to ensure that the institution's safety program, buildings, employee and inmate functions, public property, etc., are managed so that a safe environment is maintained. Provides guidance and consultation to institutional personnel, including security, in order to ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and programs relevant to an effective environmental health and safety program. Instructs and trains staff and inmates and makes inspections to ensure that they properly perform all assigned duties and post procedures in a safe manner. Directs and supervises an inspection program to detect and correct shortcomings and deficiencies in building contents, grounds, security, vehicles, sanitation and maintenance. Investigates reported hazards; accidents, fire and other incidents or conditions which impact health, welfare and safety of employees and inmates. Ensures control and proper use of all hazardous and toxic materials and contaminants in accordance with policy. Ensures control and proper use of all hazardous and toxic materials and contaminants in accordance with policy. Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire. Minimum And Additional Requirements State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience. SCDC Minimum Requirements A high school diploma and three (3) years experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience. A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year). Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
