JOB TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

PAY GRADE: Q

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision, identifies and treats health disorders among students and provides instruction in the maintenance of good health and disease prevention. The School Nurse must evaluate the physical conditions of students and refer students to appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made require discretionary judgment and analysis. Reports to the Director for Student Services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Develops policies, procedures and work standards for school health program.

Monitors compliance of school health program with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies.

Initiates program changes as needed.

Manages program allotment efficiently.

Prepares health reports for supervisor, board of education and health department.

Collaborates with other child-support agencies in designing and providing a school health program.

Negotiates professional and medical services essential to the school health program.

Provides first aid care and medically prescribed services.

Maintains security of school health supplies.

Serves as a resource person on health issues.

Provides staff development on health-related topics for school staff and volunteers.

Screens and conducts health appraisals for students and staff.

Provides follow-up evaluations on students as required.

Recommends corrective action where problems are identified.

Conducts home visits when appropriate.

Corresponds with parents on health needs of children.

Records immunizations, health findings and other relevant health data.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Maintains various records and statistics and creates annual reports to fulfill State and local requirements.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director for Student Services.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of training necessary for licensing as a registered nurse and experience in pediatrics and/or public health nursing preferred.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to perform the tasks associated with School Nurse. Physical demand requirements are for light work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, or composite characteristics of people and things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions, assignments or directions.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read simple to complex documents and forms.


Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form; to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in or from standardized situations.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in standard English.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands in performing job tasks.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under average levels of stress.

Physical Communications: Requires the ability to talk and hear.

Other: Requires certification by the American Nurses' Association (ANA) or the National Association of School Nurses (NASN).

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of medical disorders and treatment.

Considerable knowledge of child growth and development.

Working knowledge of public health problems and procedures for treatment in coordination with other health and social service agencies.

Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services.

Some knowledge of the school organization and the community served.

Ability to identify abnormal growth and development and symptoms of disease.

Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources.

Ability to develop and maintain health records on students.

Ability to develop positive working relationships.
