Pharmacy Manager

Pharmacy Manager POSITIONS SUPERVISED: Staff Pharmacist(s) and/or Certified Pharmacy Technician(s) The Pharmacy Manager supervises all pharmacy personnel to plan, implement, maintain, and monitor pharmacy services to provide the highest quality patient care and customer service.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience Applicable Degree in Pharmacy (PharmD) Previous pharmacy experience as a pharmacist is required. Previous experience in the specialized function of hospital pharmacy services to ensure competence as an institutional pharmacy manager is desirable. The ability to understand, speak and write English is required. Certificates, Licensure, Registrations Licensed and Registered Pharmacist in the State of Nebraska BLS Certified

SIGNIFICANT DUTIES

Supervises all pharmacy department staff. Observes pharmacy personnel at work and develops quality assurance techniques to ensure safe, legal and ethical practices within the department. Responsible for all aspects of pharmaceutical care throughout the facility. Plans and implements procedures in hospital pharmacy according to the hospital’s policies, legal and regulatory requirements of the State of Nebraska, Federal regulations and CMS Conditions of Participation in Medicare. Complies with all applicable policies, procedures, codes and standards of the hospital. Follows and ensures that department staff promote JMMMMC’s Mission, Vision and Values, as well as adherence to Policies and Procedures. Serves as Pharmacist to the hospital and coordinates with remote coverage pharmacists to ensure continuous pharmacy operations and patient care. Collaborates with interdisciplinary medical teams to provide evidence-based medication dosing recommendations. Provides clinical pharmacy support during emergency situations when available, including Code Blue, Trauma, and Rapid Response events, ensuring appropriate medication selection and dosing. Analyzes medical records to indicate prescribing trends and identify excessive or inappropriate usage of medications. Ensures safe and compliant sterile compounding practices are consistently following within the sterile compounding suite. Maintains necessary certifications for sterile compounding suite. Demonstrates customer service skills including friendliness, courtesy, responsiveness, confidentiality and empathy.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Coordinates and maintains pharmacy records, policies and procedures to meet all legal and federal/state accreditation or regulatory requirements. Works directly with appropriate staff responsible for facility’s computer system for the development/implementation/operation of computer programs and software for pharmacy information management system. Manages the development, implementation, and operation of the medication dispensing cabinet system to ensure safe and efficient medication distribution throughout the hospital. Oversees all purchases of medications and supplies for use within the hospital. Prepares pharmacy department budget and department reports required by the CEO/CFO. Recommends capital equipment needs to CEO/CFO and participates in analysis of future equipment purchases. Attends Medical Staff meetings to advise and inform the hospital medical staff of medication applications and characteristics. Chairs the following meetings: Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Medication Safety Committee, Antibiotic Stewardship Committee. Participates in the following meetings: Quality Assurance, Infection Prevention, Critical Operations Committee, Trauma Committee, Forms Committee, Falls Task Force, Environment of Care Committee, Discharge Planning, Emergency Preparedness, and Leadership Committee. Ensures continued professional competency by actively engaging in continuing education and staying up to date on current pharmacy practices, clinical guidelines, and regulatory standards. Monitor 340B processes and ensure compliance with regulations.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge Effective, appropriate and safe use of medications to optimize medication utilization in all hospital patients. Hospital pharmacy practice requires knowledge of the specialized function of hospital pharmacy services, usually attained by completion of a hospital residency and/or at least one year of hospital experience is desirable, but not required. Skills Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to implement comprehensive pharmacy services within the framework of the overall services offered by the hospital. Management skills appropriate for successful and efficient management of department staff. Abilities Capability of personal interaction with utmost courtesy and tact, while projecting a demeanor of warmth and welcome to all individuals who present to the Melham Medical Center pharmacy department. Capacity to teach philosophies and facts to a variety of individuals.
