Director, Breakthrough Technology Platforms

Director of Breakthrough Technologies – Syracuse, NY. Carrier’s Breakthrough Technologies team seeks a director to lead strategy, execution, and growth of breakthrough HVAC technologies, including dehumidification and carbon capture platforms. The director will develop and expand a high‑performing technical team, coordinate research and prototype development, and foster collaboration across engineering and business units. Location: Syracuse, NY. Reports to Carrier Global Director of Breakthrough Technologies. Responsibilities Develop strategy to expand the Breakthrough Technologies team footprint in Syracuse. Prioritize, create, and execute projects related to dehumidification, carbon capture, and breakthrough HVAC system solutions. Define priorities, project objectives, and KPIs using an agile, fail‑fast approach to reach TRL 5 or prototype demonstrators. Drive growth and advocacy of Breakthrough Technologies within Carrier, building relationships with senior leaders. Identify and attract top talent to build multidisciplinary project teams, coordinating with engineers, business leaders, safety officers, and external experts. Manage team goals, development, growth, and lab capabilities, including capital appropriations. Collaborate with the Carrier engineering organization and all requisite teams to ensure success. Create plans for office space and laboratory infrastructure, including psychometric labs. Required Qualifications Master’s Degree in Engineering. 10+ years of experience leading and creating technical teams, managing technical processes, IP strategies, and model/simulation experimentation. 5+ years of demonstrated ability to mature technologies and systems to TRL readiness and transfer knowledge to product development. 5+ years of experience in disruptive technologies such as independent dehumidification, carbon capture, thermodynamic cycles, or new HVAC materials. 15 % travel. Preferred Qualifications MBA or PhD. Business knowledge: drafting contracts, driving investment decisions, and managing external partner collaborations. Experience with HVAC&R systems and laboratory or modeling environments. Systems engineering and integration experience. Experience managing research project portfolios and project management. Experience creating and maintaining technical laboratories, preference for psychometric chambers. Safety, sustainability, and passion for achievement. Team oriented, quality, and respect for people. Ability to lead multi‑cultural, multidisciplinary, geographically distributed technology development teams. Familiarity with safety standards and risk assessment for products and labs. Scouting disruptive technologies and methods for readiness maturation. Experience establishing research partnerships with academic institutions.
