Data Manager
The Department of Psychiatry is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Data Manager to support a diverse portfolio of federally funded research studies and quality improvement initiatives focused on improving health outcomes for individuals with substance use disorders (SUD), including opioid use disorder (OUD), alcohol use disorder (AUD), and tobacco use. This position will work closely with investigators and multidisciplinary research teams to oversee all aspects of research data management, analysis, quality assurance, and reporting.
The Data Manager will lead the development and maintenance of complex data collection systems and databases, manage large and sensitive datasets, and implement automated processes to ensure data quality, integrity, and regulatory compliance. The individual will conduct advanced statistical analyses, generate reports and dashboards to support study operations and sponsor requirements, and provide expertise on best practices for data management and governance across multiple studies.
This role requires strong technical, analytical, and organizational skills, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with investigators, study staff, and external partners. The Data Manager will also contribute to scientific dissemination activities, including manuscripts, conference presentations, posters, and reports that advance research aimed at improving prevention, treatment, and recovery outcomes for individuals affected by substance use and related behavioral health conditions.
Responsibilities*
- Design, develop, and maintain electronic data capture systems, databases, and data collection tools across multiple federally funded human subjects research studies.
- Manage large, complex datasets by overseeing data collection, integration, cleaning, validation, and documentation to ensure data integrity, quality, and regulatory compliance.
- Conduct advanced statistical analyses and create dashboards and recurring reports to monitor enrollment, study progress, data quality metrics, and sponsor reporting requirements.
- Develop and implement automated quality assurance and quality control procedures using R and other programming languages to support efficient and accurate data management and reporting.
- Provide oversight and coordination of data-related regulatory activities, including data safety and monitoring procedures, IRB documentation, and adherence to institutional, federal, and sponsor requirements.
- Serve as a data management and analytics resource to study teams by consulting on best practices for data collection, database design, quality assurance, and data governance, and contribute to manuscripts, abstracts, posters, presentations, and other scholarly products through data analysis, interpretation, and scientific writing.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in a recognized field of science or learning which is directly related to the duties of the position
- Minimum 1-3 Years professional experience
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously.
- Proficiency in R, Qualtrics, Excel, and electronic data capture or participant management systems (e.g., EnrollNow) within a research setting.
- Experience managing, cleaning, and analyzing large, complex datasets and implementing data quality assurance procedures.
- Direct experience conducting behavioral health and human subjects research.
- Experience handling sensitive and protected health information, particularly data related to alcohol use disorder (AUD), opioid use disorder (OUD), other substance use disorders (SUD), and tobacco use.
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, psychology, health informatics, risk management, or a related field.
- Experience supporting NIH, PCORI, or other federally funded research studies, including familiarity with sponsor reporting requirements and regulatory expectations.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams with competing priorities and multiple stakeholders.
- Demonstrated analytic and scientific writing skills, including contributions to peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, posters, and technical reports.
- Experience with digital health interventions, mobile health applications, contingency management platforms, and technology-enabled behavioral health research.

Modes of Work
Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
Work Schedule
This is a full time, Monday through Friday position 9AM - 5 PM. May require occasional non-traditional hours as needed to meet study deadlines.
Work Locations
This is a hybrid position with in-person requirements at an offsite campus location in Ann Arbor as the studies require.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
