Fire Medic III (EMT- Intermediate)

Responsibilities Respond to calls to provide emergency medical assistance, providing basic and advanced life support emergency medical care; drive ambulances, conduct patient assessments, monitor vitals, maintain airway, ventilate, administer CPR, operate defibrillator, and other life support equipment. Provide advanced life support care to critical ambulance patients, including intubation, intravenous therapy, drug administration, and other advanced procedures under medical protocols. Respond to fire alarms; operate fire apparatus, fire pumps, conduct rescues, lift and drag, connect hose lines, assist ladder operations, perform salvage, overhaul, direct traffic, and establish safety zones. Respond to hazardous material incidents, request assistance, provide decontamination and/or treatment to contaminated victims. Install smoke detectors and perform pre‑fire plans; assist in planning, developing, and coordinating departmental training, conduct physical fitness training, participate in continuous training programs, maintain knowledge of operational protocols. Inspect and test fire apparatus and ambulances, maintain inventory of equipment, clean, sanitize, and perform routine maintenance. Complete and maintain accurate records, forms, and reports, including incident reports and patient care reports; prepare memorandums, correspondence, purchase orders; maintain files on personnel, equipment, operations. Conduct station drills and attend multi‑company drills. Observe all approved safety and health policies and perform all work tasks in a safe and healthy manner in accordance with County policy. Perform other assigned duties. Minimum Requirements High School Diploma or equivalent. One to two years of related work experience; preferred. Vocational or technical training in emergency medical services or firefighting. Licenses & Certifications Driver's License valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Emergency Medical Technician – Intermediate certification by the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Emergency Medical Services. CPR, Hazardous Materials – Awareness/Operations, and EVOC. Release within three months of hire and meet all certification requirements to practice as an ALS provider per the County’s Operational Medical Director. Firefighter II certification by the Virginia Department of Fire Programs. Successful completion of NIMS‑compliant Incident Command System courses (NIMS:ICS 100, 200, 700, 800). Successful completion of a criminal background check and DMV records check prior to employment. Successful passing of the NFPA 1582 medical exam as part of a conditional offer of employment. Physical Demands Tasks involve the ability to exert very heavy physical effort, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling heavy objects and materials up to 100 pounds or more. Work Environment Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. Position Availability Position available July 1, 2026. Compensation Base salary $59,616.
