Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) to oversee daily safety operations for an interior renovation project in Asheville, North Carolina.

The project involves renovations to an existing occupied facility, including office areas, conference rooms, restrooms, interior finishes, and building systems. The SSHO will work closely with project management, subcontractors, and trade personnel to maintain a safe, compliant work environment throughout the project.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee daily site safety for all construction activities.

• Ensure contractors and subcontractors comply with OSHA standards and project-specific safety requirements.

• Conduct daily safety inspections, identify hazards, and document findings.

• Lead toolbox talks, safety meetings, and site safety orientations.

• Monitor demolition, interior construction, and building-system modifications.

• Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, subcontractors, and trades to address safety concerns.

• Implement hazard-mitigation measures and track corrective actions through completion.

• Manage incident reporting, investigations, and required follow-up actions.

• Maintain safety plans, inspection reports, training records, logs, and other required documentation.

• Verify that personnel use appropriate personal protective equipment.

• Support safe work practices while minimizing disruptions within an active facility.

• Stop unsafe work when necessary and ensure hazards are corrected before work resumes.

Project Scope

Construction activities may include:

• Selective interior demolition

• Installation of new walls, doors, flooring, ceilings, and finishes

• Renovation of offices, conference rooms, restrooms, and support spaces

• Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing modifications

• Communications and low-voltage system installation

• Coordination of multiple subcontractors and trades

Required Qualifications

• Current OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification

• Previous experience serving as an SSHO or construction safety professional

• Experience supporting commercial or government construction projects

• Working knowledge of OSHA construction safety standards

• Ability to conduct inspections, recognize hazards, and implement corrective actions

• Strong safety leadership, communication, and documentation skills

• Ability to work effectively with project management, subcontractors, and field personnel

• Ability to remain on-site and actively monitor construction activities

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous safety experience on interior renovation projects

• Experience working in active or occupied facilities

• Experience coordinating safety requirements across multiple construction trades

• Experience with federal construction projects
