Content Specialist — Kansas City Jewish Chronicle

The Kansas City Jewish Chronicle, published by Jewish Federation of Kansas City, is evolving from a traditional print newspaper into a dynamic, contemporary Jewish communications brand designed to tell the stories, explore the ideas and celebrate the people that make Jewish Kansas City vibrant. 

The Content Specialist is an exempt employee and will be an essential member of the Chronicle’s team, helping bring the content strategy to life across a variety of platforms. The Content Specialist will identify and develop stories, conduct interviews, write and edit content, create digital content and support the production of The Chronicle’s monthly magazine. 

The ideal candidate is a strong, deadline-driven communicator who takes initiative, is curious about people and their stories, thrives in a social and community-focused environment, and is excited to help build something new. 

Key Responsibilities 

Writing & Content Creation 

• Write and edit a variety of content, including profiles, community stories, short features, department pieces, news briefs, event coverage and digital content. 
• Conduct interviews, research story topics and gather information from community members, leaders, experts and other sources. 
• Develop headlines, captions, introductions, social media copy and other supporting content. 
• Repurpose magazine content for the website, newsletters and social media while maintaining a consistent Chronicle voice. 

Community Storytelling 

• Build relationships with community organizations, leaders, volunteers and members to identify story ideas and content opportunities. 
• Attend community events and programs to gather information, conduct interviews and identify potential stories. 

Magazine Production 

• Support the team in executing the editorial calendar, story assignments and production schedule. 
• Proofread and fact-check content for accuracy, grammar, spelling and consistency. 
• Work with designers to ensure copy, captions, headlines, photos and other editorial elements are delivered on time and prepared for publication. 
• Assist with final proofing and quality control for each issue. 

Digital & Social Content 

• Develop and maintain content schedule for the Chronicle’s digital channels, including social media, newsletters and the website. 
• Identify opportunities to extend magazine stories and maintain a consistent flow of content between issues. 
• Create engaging social content that drives readers to Chronicle stories and encourages community conversation. 
• Monitor basic engagement metrics and help identify content that resonates with readers. 
• Assist with developing new digital storytelling formats and audience engagement opportunities. 

Editorial Coordination 

• Coordinate interviews, photo shoots and other editorial logistics. 
• Assist with photography and image coordination, including captions, photo credits and permissions. 
• Provide general editorial and administrative support for the Chronicle’s content operation. 

Qualifications and Skills 

• 1–3 years of experience in journalism, communications, content creation, marketing, publishing or a related field; equivalent experience will be considered. 
• Strong writing, editing, proofreading and interviewing skills. 
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
• Strong organizational and project-management abilities, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines. 
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy. 
• Familiarity with social media platforms and digital content creation. 
• Basic understanding of photography, visual storytelling and digital publishing preferred. 
• Knowledge of the Kansas City community and/or Jewish communal life is a plus.

Salary Range: $40,000–$50,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
