DESCRIPTION Under the overall guidance of the Director of Study Abroad with general supervision from the Assistant Director of Program Development, manage a portfolio of faculty-led global seminars from initial contract development, through student outreach, advising, application review, pre-departure orientation, crisis management, and program evaluation. Establish and maintain professional networks with study abroad providers and key UC San Diego offices. Negotiate contracts with study abroad providers for management of of global seminar logistics and risk management procedures. Coordinate with Global Seminar faculty members on outreach and marketing efforts to meet minimum enrollment goals. Plan, implement, and evaluate a variety of student recruitment and academic department outreach activities. With an emphasis on the Global Seminars Program, advise students about education abroad options, including Global Seminars (GS); the UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP); the Opportunities Abroad Program (OAP); Global Exchange; and non credit-bearing work, internship, service learning and volunteer options as needed. Evaluate the eligibility of applicants and make selection decisions. Participate in team advocacy efforts campus-wide. Advise students about, and assist with, administration of study abroad scholarships. Develop content for, plan, and implement program-specific orientations for students going abroad. Work with academic advisors in the Colleges and academic departments to pre-authorize students for courses and to facilitate the integration of education abroad coursework with UC San Diego degree requirements. Assist with recruitment, selection, and hiring of student interns and provide work direction. QUALIFICATIONS
- Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of one year of professional advising experience with student populations in an educational or counseling environment. Preference for a combination of university experience and experience working with a study abroad provider organization. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to employ fundamental counseling techniques with sensitivity, including appropriate referrals.
- Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Demonstrated skill and experience using Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as other software programs, such as online application systems (e.g. Horizons), Adobe Acrobat, graphic design software (e.g. Canva), etc. Ability to use student information systems and virtual advising platforms. Skill to conduct research and solve problems associated with use of computing systems and software packages.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance. Ability to establish priorities, set goals, organize workload, work independently, innovate when necessary, and make independent judgments about policies, procedures and work priorities within existing guidelines. Demonstrated ability to consistently interact collegially with colleagues, to be professional in all interactions, to bring a positive attitude to the workplace, to want to learn and acquire new skills, and to respect authority.
- Ability in problem identification and reasoning. Ability to mediate problems and handle sensitive issues that require tact and confidentiality. Must have demonstrable basic knowledge of counseling and student development.
- Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- Interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and administrators throughout the campus to provide information, including online resources, develop appropriate processes, ensure academic integration of study abroad coursework and resolve conflicts. Knowledge and skill in analyzing, interpreting and implementing college/university policies, procedures and requirements as they pertain to educational opportunities abroad.
- Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations. Skill in establishing rapport and in exercising professional judgment, tact and diplomacy in working with a wide range of students, parents, faculty, and staff from diverse cultural, social, and economic backgrounds.
- Proven track record in customer service. Demonstrated dedication to student populations and proven ability to sincerely work for their success. Must possess the full range of skills, knowledge and abilities to assess the needs of students while complying with policies and regulations. Proven ability to work productively and cooperatively in a high-stress, fast-paced, public environment. Ability to handle a large caseload of student advisees.
- Experience studying and/or living abroad. Knowledge about a wide variety of countries, cultures and foreign educational systems. Familiarity with international political, social and cultural issues as they pertain to educational exchange. Familiarity with regional and national study abroad networks and resources.
- Ability to independently match student objectives and qualifications with program requirements to make appropriate selection decisions. Demonstrated skill in evaluating academic records.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters with tact and discretion.
- Demonstrated ability to provide crisis management and intervention in an international context and to problem-solve and offer alternatives toward conflict resolution. Knowledge about current safety, security, and health issues, as they affect students abroad.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. Able to present clear, concise information to a diverse population and to large groups of students, parents, and campus personnel. Ability to write clearly, concisely and persuasively; editing skills. Ability to work with precision and attention to detail.
- Ability to plan and conduct large and small group meetings and workshops. Demonstrated skill in event management, publicity, and evaluation.
- Ability to determine appropriate content, design format and implement effective pre-departure and cross-cultural orientation sessions. Demonstrated skill in planning, designing, publicizing, implementing, and evaluating student orientation programs, workshops, and cross-cultural activities and events.
- Ability to coordinate, design, implement and evaluate publicity and marketing strategies and student recruitment procedures on a university campus.

- Must be available to attend professional conferences and other professional development opportunities related to international education.
