Medical Technician-Phlebotomy - Toppenish, WA

Job Title: Medical Technician-Phlebotomy

Site: Yakama Service Unit - Portland Area Indian Health Service (IHS)

Location: 401 Buster Road, Toppenish, WA 98948

Duration: 6-Month contract + 6-Month Option Period

Shift Schedule: Day Shift Only, M-F, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, 8 hours per day / 40 hours per week maximum

How Many Shifts Needed Per Month: Approximately 20-22 shifts per month (Monday-Friday, excluding federal holidays and authorized closures)

Credentialing / Onboarding Time: 6 to 8 weeks

Certifications:

  • Current BLS Certification
  • Phlebotomy certification from a nationally recognized certifying body preferred and strongly recommended, including:
    • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) - PBT(ASCP)
    • National Healthcareer Association (NHA) - CPT
    • American Medical Technologists (AMT) - RPT
    • OR equivalent recognized phlebotomy certification
Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required at minimum
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program or equivalent clinical training sufficient to meet the 1-year experience requirement and applicable certification standards
Experience Needed: Minimum 1 (one) year of experience working in phlebotomy in a clinical setting

Special Skills Needed:
  • Proficient venipuncture and phlebotomy technique with emphasis on patient safety and comfort
  • Pre-analytical specimen handling, processing, and labeling accuracy
  • CLIA-waived testing with quality control compliance
  • EHR documentation - RPMS experience preferred (Government orientation provided)
  • Laboratory inventory management
  • Front-desk and reception skills - patient check-in, scheduling, and phone management
  • Knowledge of HIPAA, infection control, and applicable biosafety standards
  • Strong patient communication skills in a tribal healthcare environment
Responsibilities:
  • Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection with emphasis on patient safety and comfort
  • Support pre-analytical phase of laboratory testing including specimen handling and processing
  • Perform CLIA-waived testing in compliance with quality control requirements
  • Document patient information and specimen details accurately in EHR/RPMS
  • Manage laboratory inventory and maintain organized records
  • Oversee laboratory reception - patient check-in, appointment scheduling, and phone management
  • Coordinate patient flow to enhance efficiency and minimize wait times
  • Complete required IHS training, competency assessments, and department meetings
  • Comply with HIPAA, Privacy Act, credentialing, background, and Public Law 101-630 requirements
  • Submit all post-award documentation within 10 days of award
  • Maintain accurate daily timekeeping per IHS requirements
