About Innovative Medicine Johnson & Johnson’s Innovative Medicine division focuses on developing medicines that prevent, treat, and cure complex diseases. The team works across the full spectrum of healthcare solutions to deliver breakthroughs that improve patient outcomes. About the role The Senior Director of External Innovation, DPDS (Biologics Modality Focused), will reside in either SanFrancisco or SanDiego. As a senior member of the Global External Innovation Team, this role provides strategic and operational leadership over scouting and evaluation of external partnerships in the West North America region, with a deep focus on biologic modalities (antibodies, recombinant proteins, cell and gene therapy, oncolytic viruses, coding nucleic acids). Responsibilities Lead the WNA component of external technology innovation within DPDS, aligning with DPDS strategy and the overall vision. Work with local synthetic modalities counterparts to advance opportunities in WNA. Coordinate with the global DPDS EI team to bring WNA opportunities into a global view and assess science for opportunity prioritization. Present to senior stakeholders on science and technology, explaining strategic alignment and supporting data. Develop and sustain cross‑functional networks, building productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Represent J&J Innovative Medicine to external partners (biotech companies, academic institutes) at conferences and events in the WNA region. Lead modality‑focused due diligence for DPDS, collaborating with business development, external scientific innovation, and therapeutic area stakeholders. Serve as subject‑matter expert in deal teams, working with transactors and legal to execute scientific partnership contracts. Demonstrate Credo values in all day‑to‑day interactions. Qualifications PhD with 10+ years of industrial drug discovery or development experience, or MS with 15+ years. Deep scientific expertise in biologic modalities, supported by peer‑reviewed publications and patents. Major or concentration in Biochemistry, Cell/Molecular Biology, or Pharmaceutical Sciences (preferred). Leadership skills and proven ability to think strategically and deliver on objectives. Experience leading end‑to‑end drug discovery projects in the (bio)pharmaceutical industry. Business and transaction experience playing a scientific expert role, with knowledge of IP provisions. Familiarity with AI/ML‑driven discovery, high‑dimensional biology, and translational approaches (advantageous). Proficiency in planning, proactivity, self‑motivation, and independent work. Excellent oral and written communication; highly valued intercultural social skills. Preferred: Sustainability, Tactical Planning. Benefits and Compensation Compensation includes a base pay range of $173,000 to $299,000 (adjusted for CA, Bay Area) and an annual performance bonus. Employees are eligible for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short‑ and long‑term disability, business accident insurance, group legal insurance, and the company’s retirement and savings plans. Time off includes up to 120 hours of vacation per year, 40 hours of sick time (up to 56 hours for Washington state residents), up to 13 days of holiday pay including floating holidays, and up to 40 hours of work‑personal and family time per year.
